Chapter 15 — The Hidden Ashford Heir

The photograph remained on the dusty desk.

Nobody touched it.

Because nobody knew how.

A picture that should have meant nothing had just changed the entire Ashford family forever.

A little girl standing beside Elizabeth Ashford.

A little girl nobody knew existed.

A little girl named Emma Carter.

Claire stared at the photograph.

"I don't understand."

Richard looked at her.

"Neither do I."

Detective Reed carefully examined the picture.

"The date?"

Richard took it from him.

His hands shook.

"Twenty years ago."

Alex looked at his father.

"You had another child?"

Richard looked away.

"No."

"Then my mother did?"

Silence.

Richard couldn't answer.

But the silence itself was an answer.

Alex stepped back.

His entire childhood suddenly felt like a story someone else had written.

His mother.

His father.

His family.

All hiding something.

Claire reached for his hand.

He held it.

Because despite everything...

She was the only person who had never abandoned him.

They returned to the Ashford Estate before sunrise.

Nobody slept.

Nobody could.

The mansion that had always represented power now felt like a place filled with ghosts.

Alex sat in his office reviewing old family records.

Then he found something.

A missing page.

The birth records from twenty years ago.

A section had been removed.

Not hidden.

Not lost.

Removed.

Someone had intentionally taken it.

Detective Reed looked at the empty space.

"Someone didn't want anyone finding out."

Alex looked at him.

"Who had access?"

Reed looked at the list.

"Only family members."

Again.

The same answer.

Family.

Meanwhile, Claire stood in the garden.

The same garden where she had worked as a maid.

The same place where people ignored her.

Where they assumed she was powerless.

She remembered the first day she entered the mansion.

She had no money.

No protection.

Only a promise from Elizabeth.

"Stay close to my son. One day, he will need someone who tells him the truth."

Claire never understood those words.

Until now.

Emma knew everything.

Emma had been watching.

Waiting.

But why?

"Because she wanted revenge."

Claire turned.

Richard stood behind her.

She looked surprised.

"Revenge against who?"

Richard sighed.

"Everyone."

Claire studied his face.

"You knew Emma existed."

Richard looked down.

"Yes."

The answer shocked her.

"Richard."

"I didn't know where she was."

"But you knew."

He nodded.

"Elizabeth and I had a daughter before Alex was born."

Claire froze.

Richard continued.

"Her name was Emily."

"Not Emma?"

"No."

His voice became heavy.

"After a family scandal, Elizabeth changed her identity to protect her."

Claire whispered:

"Why?"

Richard looked toward the mansion.

"Because someone tried to kill her."

A cold silence followed.

"Who?"

Richard looked at Claire.

"The same person who is trying to destroy Alex now."

That night, Alex received an envelope.

No name.

No address.

Just delivered to his private office.

Inside was a letter.

Written by Emma.

"Alex,"

"You have spent your entire life believing you were the only Ashford child."

"You were wrong."

"Your mother chose you."

"Your father chose power."

"And Claire chose sacrifice."

Alex continued reading.

"But there is one person who chose revenge."

A pause.

"I hope you understand why I had to become someone you hated before you knew who I was."

At the bottom was a location.

An old abandoned church outside the city.

And one final sentence.

"Come alone if you want the truth about your mother."

Alex immediately grabbed his coat.

But Claire stopped him.

"No."

He looked at her.

"I need answers."

"And she wants you alone."

"Exactly."

Claire shook her head.

"That's what people do when they want control."

Alex looked at her.

"You think it's a trap?"

Claire nodded.

"I know it is."

Two hours later.

Alex arrived at the old church.

Alone.

Rain poured down.

The doors opened before he touched them.

Inside, candles were burning.

A woman stood near the altar.

Older than the girl in the photograph.

But unmistakably familiar.

Emma Carter.

Or Emily Ashford.

She turned.

For the first time, Alex saw the woman who had been hidden from him his entire life.

"Hello, brother."

Alex stopped.

The word hit harder than expected.

Brother.

She smiled sadly.

"You look just like her."

"My mother?"

Emma nodded.

"Yes."

Alex stepped closer.

"Why?"

Her smile disappeared.

"Because she died protecting you."

A pause.

"And because the person who killed her..."

May you like

Emma looked directly into his eyes.

"Was the person you trust the most."
