Chapter 11 — The Third Enemy

The photograph sat in the center of the table.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody wanted to.

Because everyone understood what it meant.

Someone had been inside the room.

Someone had been close enough to take the picture.

Someone who knew every secret they had just uncovered.

Alex slowly picked up the photograph.

His eyes moved across the faces.

His own.

Claire.

Richard.

Daniel.

Everyone who had been trapped inside this nightmare.

Then he turned the picture over.

The message remained.

"You are looking for one enemy. You should be looking for three."

Claire felt a cold wave pass through her.

"No."

Alex looked at her.

"What?"

She shook her head.

"There were never supposed to be three."

Richard looked concerned.

"Claire."

She stared at the photograph.

"Daniel had partners."

Alex's expression hardened.

"How many?"

Claire swallowed.

"Two."

The room went silent.

"One controlled the money."

She pointed at the photograph.

"One controlled the information."

A pause.

"And one controlled the people."

Alex understood immediately.

"The person who ordered my mother's death."

Claire nodded.

"But I thought that person was gone."

Richard frowned.

"You knew?"

Claire looked at him.

"Elizabeth told me."

She closed her eyes.

"She told me there was someone above Daniel."

Someone Daniel himself feared.

The police searched the mansion for hours.

Every camera.

Every entrance.

Every hidden room.

But they found nothing.

No fingerprints.

No evidence.

No sign anyone had entered.

Which meant only one thing.

The person who took the photograph already knew the house better than anyone.

Alex stood in the security room watching the footage.

His security chief shook his head.

"Mr. Ashford, whoever did this knew exactly where the blind spots were."

Alex looked at the screen.

"Inside information."

"Yes."

"Family."

The security chief hesitated.

"I didn't say that."

"But you thought it."

The man stayed silent.

Alex didn't blame him.

Because he was thinking the same thing.

The enemy was not outside.

The enemy was inside.

Later that night, Claire sat alone in the bedroom.

The room that had once felt safe now felt unfamiliar.

Alex entered quietly.

She looked up.

"I know what you're thinking."

He stopped.

"What?"

"That you married someone you don't know."

Alex looked at her.

"Claire..."

"No."

She stood.

"You deserve the truth."

She walked to an old wooden box hidden in the closet.

From inside, she removed several documents.

"I kept these because I thought one day I might need them."

Alex opened the first page.

His expression changed.

A birth certificate.

A different name.

Claire Morgan.

Then another document.

A witness statement.

Signed fifteen years ago.

And then—

A photograph.

A young woman.

Claire.

Standing beside Elizabeth Ashford.

Alex looked up.

"You knew my mother before me."

Claire nodded.

"Yes."

"How?"

Claire looked away.

"Because your mother was the first person who believed me."

A pause.

"And she was the reason I survived."

Alex sat down.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"Because I was afraid that if you knew everything..."

She touched her stomach.

"You would look at our child and only see the danger connected to me."

Alex immediately moved closer.

"No."

But Claire stepped back.

"That's why I hid."

A silence passed.

Then Alex noticed something.

A small envelope inside the box.

He picked it up.

Claire's face changed.

"Don't."

But it was too late.

Alex opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Written by Elizabeth Ashford.

The first line made his heart stop.

"If my son ever finds this, it means I failed to protect him."
