Chapter 13 — The Woman Who Came Back From The Grave

Claire couldn't move.
The name echoed inside her mind.
Emma.
A name she had buried fifteen years ago.
A name connected to the darkest night of her life.
Alex watched his wife's face change.
Not anger.
Not confusion.
Fear.
Real fear.
"Claire."
His voice softened.
"Who is Emma?"
Claire looked at the phone in his hand.
Her lips trembled.
"She was my best friend."
Richard frowned.
"Was?"
Claire nodded slowly.
"Because she died."
Nobody spoke.
Alex stared at her.
"You saw her die?"
Claire closed her eyes.
"Yes."
She remembered.
A hospital hallway.
A broken ambulance.
A woman holding her hand.
A promise.
Then silence.
Emma had been the only person who knew everything.
The only person who knew about Daniel.
The only person who knew Elizabeth Ashford had trusted Claire.
And the only person who could prove Claire wasn't lying.
But Emma was gone.
Or at least...
Claire thought she was.
The next morning, Alex gathered everyone in the private conference room.
No employees.
No advisors.
Only the people connected to the past.
Claire.
Richard.
And a detective he personally trusted.
Detective Michael Reed had worked with Alex for years.
He was one of the few people Alex believed could handle the truth.
"We need facts," Alex said.
Detective Reed placed several files on the table.
"Emma Carter."
He opened the first file.
"Medical records show she died fifteen years ago."
Claire looked relieved for one second.
Then Reed continued.
"But the death certificate was altered."
The room froze.
"What?"
Reed placed another document down.
"The original record shows the body was never identified."
Claire stared.
"No."
She covered her mouth.
"That can't be."
Reed looked at her.
"Claire, whoever died that night may not have been Emma."
Alex looked at his wife.
"And nobody told you?"
Claire shook her head.
"I was told she died."
Richard looked troubled.
"By who?"
Claire's face changed.
Because she suddenly remembered.
The person who delivered the news.
The person who comforted her.
The person who told her to disappear.
"Victoria."
Everyone turned.
"Victoria Hale?"
Claire nodded.
"She was the one who found me after Daniel vanished."
Alex's eyes narrowed.
"Victoria knew about your past?"
Claire looked at him.
"I thought she was helping me."
Silence.
Then Alex stood.
"She was never helping you."
At that exact moment, Victoria Hale was sitting inside a private room at a downtown hotel.
She was no longer the confident woman who had humiliated Claire.
She looked exhausted.
Terrified.
A man sat across from her.
Older.
Calm.
Wearing a dark suit.
"You failed."
Victoria looked down.
"I didn't know she was his wife."
The man smiled.
"That was your mistake."
"I thought Claire was just a maid."
The man leaned forward.
"Everyone thought that."
Victoria swallowed.
"What happens now?"
The man looked out the window.
"Now Alex Ashford starts digging."
"And?"
"Now we make sure he finds the wrong answers."
Victoria hesitated.
"What about Claire?"
The man smiled.
"Claire has spent fifteen years running from the truth."
A pause.
"Let's see what happens when the truth starts running toward her."
That evening, Alex and Claire arrived at the abandoned Ashford headquarters.
The building stood empty.
Dark.
Forgotten.
But the security system was still active.
Someone had been using it.
Detective Reed examined the entrance.
"Someone has been here recently."
Alex looked at Claire.
"Daniel?"
She shook her head.
"No."
"How do you know?"
"Because Daniel always leaves a message."
A cold silence followed.
Then the elevator suddenly turned on.
The doors opened.
Nobody was inside.
Except for a small package.
Claire approached slowly.
Alex stopped her.
"I'll do it."
He picked up the package.
Inside was a single item.
A cassette tape.
Old.
Damaged.
And labeled with one word.
ELIZABETH
Richard's face went pale.
"No."
Alex looked at him.
"What?"
Richard whispered:
"That tape was destroyed."
Claire looked confused.
"Destroyed by who?"
Richard didn't answer.
Then the lights in the building turned on.
One floor after another.
Someone had activated the entire building.
And from the speakers above them...
A woman's voice began playing.
Elizabeth Ashford.
Her voice.
Recorded fifteen years ago.
"If you are hearing this..."
Everyone froze.
"Then I am already gone."
Alex closed his eyes.
Hearing his mother's voice after so many years broke something inside him.
"There is a betrayal inside this family."
A pause.
"And the person responsible is not Daniel Cross."
Claire looked at Richard.
Then the recording continued.
"It is someone I loved."
The tape stopped.
One sentence remained.
One sentence that changed everything.
Because Elizabeth had named the person.
And that person was not Richard.
It was not Daniel.
It was not Claire.

The voice had said:
"My daughter."
