Chapter 9 - DOMINIC’S COUNTERATTACK
Dominic filed an emergency motion before dawn.
The petition accused me of illegally surveilling hospital staff.
It claimed I manipulated Julian through edited recordings.
It requested immediate removal of Ava from both parents until the dispute could be evaluated.
The assigned judge was Harold Wynn.
He had served on the Vance Health Foundation board for fourteen years.
I found the relationship within minutes.
Dominic expected the hearing to occur privately.
Instead, my attorney requested public proceedings and disclosed the conflict.
Judge Wynn refused to recuse himself.
Then a payment appeared in the foundation audit.
His wife’s consulting company had received two million dollars from Dominic’s firm.
The state judicial commission intervened.
A new judge was assigned.
Dominic’s first weapon failed.
He tried another.
A financial-crimes complaint accused me of accessing confidential Vance records.
My former supervisor at the state attorney’s office reviewed the evidence.
Every document I used came from public filings, my legally obtained family records, or materials sent to me directly.
The complaint was dismissed.
Dominic then released selected clips from our home surveillance.
One showed me placing a camera inside the maternity-suite vent.
Another showed me telling my attorney that Eleanor would eventually make a mistake.
News commentators called me calculating.
They asked why a pregnant woman expected an attack.
I held a press conference from the hospital.
Ava slept against Julian’s chest.
“I installed lawful security because members of my husband’s family repeatedly discussed removing my child.”
“I documented threats.”
“I preserved evidence.”
“Preparation does not make abuse less real.”
A reporter asked why I remained married.
I looked at Julian.
“Because believing someone may change is not the same as giving them unlimited chances.”
The answer did not protect him from criticism.
I did not intend it to.
Julian spoke next.
“My wife told me the truth.”
“I minimized it.”
“My family used my denial to harm her.”
“I am responsible for the choices I made after being warned.”
Eleanor’s public-relations team expected him to blame me.
He blamed himself.
Their narrative weakened.
Then investigators executed search warrants on Dominic’s law firm.
They found draft psychiatric reports for me, Claire, and four other women connected to Vance heirs.
The family had used guardianship law as a financial weapon for decades.
