Chapter 10 - THE SAFE BENEATH THE NURSERY

We returned home three days after Ava’s birth.

Hospital security escorted us through a private exit.

The Vance mansion no longer felt like a home.

Every hallway carried memories of Eleanor entering without permission.

Julian ordered the locks changed.

He removed every family employee selected by his mother.

I did not celebrate.

Replacing Eleanor’s people with Julian’s people would not create safety.

We hired an independent firm reporting to both of us.

While checking the nursery, a technician found an electronic signal beneath the floor.

A small safe had been installed under the built-in wardrobe.

Julian had never seen it.

Inside were passports.

Cash.

Medication.

And a birth certificate for Ava.

The document listed Eleanor as the legal mother.

My name did not appear.

Another file contained an international travel authorization supposedly signed by Julian.

The destination was Switzerland.

Dominic had prepared an escape plan.

If the hospital custody effort failed, Eleanor could remove Ava from the country.

Julian looked at the passport photograph.

It had been taken during Ava’s first hour of life.

Someone inside the nursery had photographed her.

The hospital security review identified Madeline Price.

She had carried a private camera beneath her uniform.

Her payment agreement included a second bonus if Ava left the hospital with Eleanor.

Police arrested her that evening.

Rebecca entered witness protection after receiving threats.

Inside the safe, I found something else.

A key to a storage facility.

The unit had been rented by Dominic.

Investigators opened it.

Rows of boxes contained medical files, trust documents, recordings, and personal information.

Each box carried a woman’s name.

Most had married into wealthy families.

Several had lost children through emergency guardianship petitions.

Dominic had not invented the system for us.

He had sold it to other families.

The Vances were only his most powerful clients.

One box carried my name.

It contained photographs from before I met Julian.

My college records.

My mother’s debt history.

My former relationships.

A report described which personal facts could be used to portray me as unstable.

Julian read the first page.

Then he closed the box.

“I married you while they were building a case against you.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

May you like

“Because they never saw me as your wife.”

“They saw me as the future mother of an asset.”
