Chapter 7 - THE SISTER WHO DISAPPEARED

Julian’s older sister, Claire Vance, had died twelve years earlier.

At least, that was what Julian believed.

The family said she suffered a boating accident during a private retreat in Maine.

Her body was never recovered.

Eleanor spoke of Claire rarely.

Whenever Julian asked questions, she said grief was making him obsessive.

The foundation records revealed something else.

A clinic in Vermont received monthly payments under the code CV-17.

The payments began one week after Claire’s supposed death.

They continued for nine years.

I showed Julian the records.

He stared at the initials.

“No.”

“It could mean anything.”

“The clinic is called Newbridge Behavioral Residence.”

“They specialize in long-term guardianship patients.”

Julian stood.

“My sister is dead.”

“Then someone used her name to pay for a patient.”

We contacted state investigators.

Newbridge resisted releasing information.

A court order forced them to open the records.

Claire Vance had been admitted under another name.

She was thirty-one at the time.

The diagnosis claimed severe delusional disorder.

Her legal guardian was Eleanor.

Claire remained inside the clinic for nine years.

She died after an untreated infection.

Julian read the file in silence.

Claire had challenged family transfers shortly before her disappearance.

She accused Eleanor of moving money through the health foundation.

Dominic prepared the psychiatric petition.

Dr. Hale signed it.

The family told everyone Claire was dead.

In reality, they buried her alive inside a private institution.

Julian’s hands began shaking.

“I never visited her.”

“You did not know.”

“She wrote letters.”

The file contained more than sixty.

None had been mailed.

The first said,

Julian, Mother is lying.

The second said,

Please come before they increase the medicine.

The final letter was written one month before Claire died.

I do not know whether you stopped looking or whether they told you not to.

I still remember the brother who believed me when we were children.

Julian pressed the page against his mouth.

Ava slept inside the bassinet beside us.

Eleanor had tried to use the same system against me.

The false diagnosis.

The private clinic.

The guardianship papers.

The separation from family.

This was not her first attempt.

It was the family’s method.
