He kept enough to support Ava’s future but not enough to dominate the company.

I returned to forensic accounting.
My first major project examined medical foundations connected to family courts.
I did not use the Vance name.
I did not need it.
Julian and I remained separated for two years.
He visited Ava.
He attended parenting classes.
He learned how to prepare bottles, manage fevers, and change plans without treating inconvenience as betrayal.
Our conversations slowly changed.
He stopped asking when I would forgive him.
He began asking what Ava needed.
One evening, after putting her to sleep, he found me in the kitchen.
“I received the final divorce hearing date.”
“So did I.”
“Do you want to proceed?”
I looked at him.
“I don’t know.”
He nodded.
“That is allowed.”
The old Julian would have demanded certainty.
The man before me accepted that trust could not be forced into a deadline.
