Chapter 11 - THE WOMEN IN THE BOXES
My former office formed a special investigative team.
I joined only as a witness and consultant.
I refused to direct the case involving my own family.
The storage files identified nine women.
Four were alive and still separated from their children.
Two had died inside private clinics.
Three had disappeared after receiving settlements.
The first woman to speak publicly was Hannah Cole.
She married Eleanor’s cousin fifteen years earlier.
After giving birth to twins, she was diagnosed with severe postpartum psychosis.
She denied the diagnosis.
Dominic represented her husband.
Dr. Hale signed the report.
Hannah spent eleven months inside Newbridge.
By the time she was released, her husband controlled her inheritance and had moved abroad with the children.
“I thought I was alone,” she said during the interview.
“You were supposed to,” I answered.
“Isolation makes lies easier to maintain.”
Another woman, Rachel Moss, still carried scars from restraints.
She remembered Eleanor visiting the clinic.
“She called us difficult wives.”
“She said powerful families required discipline.”
The investigation grew beyond one custody dispute.
Federal prosecutors entered.
The health foundation’s accounts were frozen.
Hospital executives resigned.
Judge Wynn was suspended.
Dr. Hale attempted to leave the country.
Agents arrested him at the airport.
He agreed to cooperate after learning Dominic had disappeared.
Hale admitted signing false reports.
He claimed Eleanor and Dominic threatened to expose his gambling debts.
He also admitted receiving millions.
Fear and greed had worked together.
One did not cancel the other.
Hale revealed that Dominic maintained a second archive.
The location was known only to Eleanor.
It contained original recordings and signed instructions.
Without it, defense attorneys could claim Dominic acted independently.
Julian asked his mother where it was.
She refused to answer.
Then the mansion received a package.
Inside was Claire’s final hospital bracelet.
A note was wrapped around it.
STOP THE INVESTIGATION.
