Chapter 1 - THE MOMENT JULIAN FINALLY LOOKED

Julian stood beside my hospital bed with the blanket hanging from his hand.

The anger that had filled his face seconds earlier was gone.

In its place was something I had never seen before.

Fear.

His eyes moved slowly across the bruises covering my legs.

Some were round and dark from the nurses gripping me against the rails.

Others stretched in long purple lines from my knees toward my hips.

I pulled the hospital gown lower, but there was no way to hide what had happened.

“Clara,” Julian whispered.

“Who did this?”

I looked toward the door.

“Your family.”

Eleanor entered almost immediately.

She wore an ivory suit, pearl earrings, and the pleasant expression she used whenever she wanted cruelty to look reasonable.

Dominic followed her with the leather portfolio beneath one arm.

Eleanor glanced at my bruises.

Then she looked at Julian.

“So she has convinced you with another performance.”

Julian did not answer.

His hands closed into fists.

Dominic placed the portfolio on the tray.

“Clara became physically aggressive when hospital staff attempted to discuss discharge arrangements.”

I stared at him.

“You forced a pen into my hand.”

“You refused necessary medical documents.”

“They were custody papers.”

“They were temporary protective forms.”

“For a baby who has been alive for less than a day.”

Eleanor stepped closer.

“Our granddaughter requires stability.”

“You have shown repeatedly that you cannot provide it.”

Julian looked at his mother.

“What does that mean?”

Eleanor’s voice softened.

“Your wife has been emotional throughout the pregnancy.”

“She has made accusations.”

“She has hidden money.”

“She has become suspicious of everyone.”

Julian turned toward me.

Months earlier, he would have accepted every word.

He had already accused me of exaggerating Eleanor’s behavior.

He had called Dominic cold but competent.

He had told me the nurses were professionals and I should cooperate.

Now he looked at the bruises again.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I tried.”

“You said I was letting stress control me.”

His face tightened.

Eleanor touched his arm.

“Julian, the baby is safe in the nursery.”

“Let Clara rest while we complete the paperwork.”

I reached beneath my pillow.

My fingers closed around a small remote.

Dominic noticed.

“What is that?”

I pressed one button.

The television mounted on the wall came to life.

The screen showed the same hospital room from two hours earlier.

Eleanor stood beside my bed.

Dominic held my wrist.

Two nurses forced my legs against the steel rails.

Every person in the room became silent.

Then Eleanor’s recorded voice filled the air.

“Sign it now, Clara.”

“Once the baby is home with us, no one will care what you claim happened here.”
