Chapter 14 - THE DIVORCE PAPERS

One week after the vault was discovered, I gave Julian divorce papers.
He read the first page inside our kitchen.
Ava slept in a bassinet nearby.
His face became pale.
“You are leaving.”
“I am creating legal distance.”
“From me?”
“From the structure that allowed this.”
“I chose you.”
“After the bruises.”
He lowered his eyes.
The words were cruel.
They were also true.
Julian had defended me only after evidence became impossible to ignore.
Before that, he had asked me to tolerate his mother.
He had shared financial information with Dominic.
He had signed documents without reading them.
He had allowed Eleanor access to our medical decisions.
“I am trying to change,” he said.
“I know.”
“Does that mean nothing?”
“It means something.”
“It does not mean I owe you immediate trust.”
He sat across from me.
“Do you want full custody?”
“I want primary custody while you complete counseling and legal separation from the family trust.”
“I already resigned from the board.”
“You still control shares.”
“I can transfer them.”
“Do not make another enormous decision because you are frightened I will leave.”
Julian looked at the papers.
“What do you want?”
“I want time.”
“I want a home where your mother’s name cannot open a door.”
“I want Ava protected by rules that do not depend on whether you feel brave that day.”
He signed the temporary separation agreement.
He did not sign the final divorce petition.
He had the right to respond through counsel.
“I will not fight you for control,” he said.
“I will fight for the chance to remain her father.”
“That is fair.”
Julian moved into a rented apartment.
He visited Ava under an agreed schedule.
He never arrived without calling.
He never brought family employees.
He attended therapy.
He read Claire’s letters.
He met the women harmed by the guardianship system.
Change did not make our marriage whole.
It made honesty possible.

That was a smaller beginning.
It was also the only one I trusted.
