Chapter 15 - THE TRIAL OF ELEANOR VANCE
Eleanor’s trial began fourteen months after Ava’s birth.
Dominic accepted a cooperation agreement after prosecutors charged him with kidnapping conspiracy.
He testified against her.
Dr. Hale testified.
Rebecca testified.
Hospital administrators testified.
Then I took the stand.
The prosecution played the maternity-suite recording.
The jury watched my legs strike the steel rails.
They watched Dominic force the pen into my hand.
They heard Eleanor say no one would care after Ava went home with her.
Eleanor’s attorney approached me.
“You installed a hidden camera weeks before labor.”
“Yes.”
“You expected conflict.”
“Yes.”
“You intended to gather evidence against my client.”
“I intended to preserve evidence if she acted on repeated threats.”
“You were suspicious.”
“Correctly.”
“Isn’t extreme suspicion a symptom of instability?”
I looked toward the jury.
“It is also a reasonable response when someone is actually planning to take your child.”
The attorney changed direction.
“You remained married to Julian despite fearing his family.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because love can make intelligent people postpone decisions they know they should make.”
“Were you financially motivated?”
“I earned more before leaving my career.”
“You gained access to the Vance trust.”
“I filed legal documents refusing control of Ava’s shares.”
The jury saw those documents next.
Ava’s inheritance had been placed under an independent institution.
Neither Julian nor I could withdraw funds for personal use.
The financial motive disappeared.
Julian testified after me.
His mother watched him approach the witness box.
“You would betray your own mother?” she asked.
The judge ordered her silent.
Julian looked toward her.
