Chapter 17 - THE SENTENCES AND THE LETTER
Eleanor received twenty-seven years in federal prison.
She would be nearly ninety if released.
During sentencing, she asked to address Julian.
“I gave you everything.”
Julian remained seated.
She continued.
“I protected this family after your father died.”
“I kept the company intact.”
“I made you strong.”
Julian looked at her.
“You made me afraid to disagree.”
“That is not strength.”
Eleanor turned toward me.
“You destroyed my son.”
I answered quietly.
“No.”
“I showed him a recording.”
“He decided what to do with the truth.”
Dominic received fifteen years.
Dr. Hale received nine.
Madeline received six.
Judge Wynn was convicted later on corruption charges.
The foundation paid restitution to women harmed by the guardianship network.
Newbridge Behavioral Residence closed permanently.
Claire’s remains were moved from an unmarked clinic cemetery to a grave bearing her real name.
Julian invited me to the memorial.
I attended with Ava.
Claire’s final letter was read beneath a gray winter sky.
Julian,
If you ever learn what happened, do not spend your life proving you would have saved me.
Save the next person before everyone else agrees she needs saving.
Julian folded the letter.
He looked toward me.
“I waited too long.”
“Yes.”
“I will not ask you to say I am different now.”
“Good.”
“I will keep becoming different.”
That answer felt more trustworthy.
