Chapter 9 - THE SECRET JULIAN PRETENDED NOT TO KNOW

Elena confronted Julian through counsel.
The question was simple.
“When did you learn Marlowe entities owned the resort land?”
Julian refused to answer.
Investigators answered for him.
Arthur’s archived office contained meeting notes.
Julian attended two private sessions before the wedding.
Arthur explained that Marlowe trusts owned critical resort properties.
He did not reveal Elena’s full beneficial interest.
But Julian knew her family controlled the land.
So every time he mocked Thomas as merely an old investor.
Every time he called Aurelia his empire.
Every time he told Elena her family no longer mattered.
He was performing.
Why?
The answer lay in another Arthur memo.
JULIAN ROSSI IS AMBITIOUS ENOUGH TO BUILD.
QUESTION IS WHETHER HE IS HONEST ENOUGH TO SHARE.
Arthur had created performance incentives.
Julian could earn significant wealth by growing Aurelia successfully.
He did.
Tens of millions.
But never ownership of the underlying Marlowe land.
At first, that arrangement appeared to satisfy him.
Then Arthur died.
Julian began trying to convert influence into control.
He moved Elena out of financial decisions.
He hired Lewis Benton, an aggressive restructuring lawyer.
He started exploring whether leaseholds could be pledged.
Then Camila appeared.
Then the forged documents.
Elena sat with Thomas late that evening.
“So he knew who I was.”
“Partly.”
“He married me anyway.”
“Yes.”
“Does that mean he loved me?”
Thomas looked at his daughter.
“It means one fact does not answer another.”
Elena hated how wise that sounded.
People could love and betray.
Admire and exploit.
Build and destroy.
Julian may have loved her once.
That did not matter enough anymore.
Then Miriam arrived carrying Arthur’s private notes.
“There’s something else.”
Arthur had created a succession condition.
If Julian remained married to Elena and served Aurelia honorably for fifteen years, he became eligible for a substantial non-voting profit interest.
Current projected value.
More than $120 million.
Julian was six years away.
He did not know the amount.
He knew an incentive existed.
Elena stared at the document.
“He could have become richer by simply staying honest.”
Thomas nodded.
Instead, Julian tried to steal control sooner.
Then Miriam turned another page.
The incentive terminated automatically upon fraud against Marlowe entities or intentional humiliation designed to coerce Elena’s interests.
Arthur had written that clause personally.
Elena almost smiled.
Her grandfather had understood Julian better than all of them.

The lobby confrontation had not only cost Julian his job.
It may have cost him the largest legitimate fortune he would ever have received.
