Chapter 1 - BEFORE SUNRISE

Rain rolled off Elena Marlowe’s hair and down the collar of her black evening dress.

Behind her, the illuminated entrance of the Aurelia Grand Resort glowed like a palace.

She had designed those lights.

She had chosen the stone beneath Julian’s shoes.

She had approved the curved staircase inside the lobby.

And twenty minutes earlier, her husband had ordered two security guards to escort her through the same doors like a trespasser.

Elena stood beneath the covered drive with her phone pressed against her ear.

Her father’s voice remained calm.

“So he finally crossed the line?”

“Yes.”

“Did he touch you?”

“No.”

“Did security?”

“They grabbed my arms.”

A pause.

“Names?”

“Derek and Paul.”

“Anyone witness it?”

“Half the lobby.”

Her father exhaled.

“Good.”

Elena almost laughed.

“Good?”

“Witnesses matter.”

That was Thomas Marlowe.

He had never wasted anger when documentation would do more damage.

Elena looked through the glass doors.

Julian stood near the champagne bar.

His arm was around Camila Laurent.

Camila still wore Elena’s cashmere coat.

The emerald pendant rested against her throat.

Elena’s grandmother had worn that pendant when she opened the first Marlowe seaside hotel in 1968.

Julian knew exactly what it meant.

He had told Elena it disappeared during renovations six months earlier.

Now his mistress wore it like a trophy.

“Dad.”

“Yes?”

“I want everything opened.”

Thomas was silent.

“You understand what that means?”

“Yes.”

“If we activate the Marlowe holding agreements, there is no quiet way back.”

“I know.”

“Julian will learn everything.”

“That’s the point.”

Thomas’s answer was immediate.

“Then we begin.”

At 11:47 p.m., Marlowe Family Holdings sent its first emergency instruction.

At 11:52, the independent trustee froze changes to executive authority across the Aurelia resort group.

At 11:56, the company’s general counsel received notice of an emergency beneficial-ownership review.

At midnight, the global reservation system revoked Julian’s unilateral super-admin privileges.

He did not notice.

He was too busy ordering champagne.

At 12:04 a.m., the penthouse elevator refused to recognize Camila’s keycard.

She tried again.

Red light.

Again.

Red.

Julian grabbed the card.

“What the hell?”

The house manager approached nervously.

“Mr. Rossi, your executive access appears to have been modified.”

“By who?”

“I don’t know.”

Julian pulled out his phone.

His corporate banking application requested additional authorization.

His private aviation account displayed the same message.

TEMPORARY HOLD PENDING OWNERSHIP VERIFICATION.

His smile disappeared.

Outside, Elena watched through the glass.

Her father’s security vehicle arrived.

Before Elena entered, Thomas spoke one final sentence.

“Go somewhere safe.”

“What about Julian?”

“Let him enjoy his resort.”

Elena looked once more at the building.

May you like

Then she smiled.

“He has until sunrise.”
