Chapter 3 - THE EMERALD PENDANT

At 2:13 a.m., Elena received a call from the resort’s head of security.

Not Derek.

Not Paul.

Their supervisor.

Michael Reyes had worked for Aurelia for fourteen years.

He sounded embarrassed.

“Mrs. Rossi.”

“Elena.”

He corrected himself.

“Elena.”

“What happened?”

“We have an issue involving your jewelry.”

Her hand tightened around the phone.

“The emerald pendant?”

“Yes.”

“How did you know?”

“The serial registration appeared after legal activated the Marlowe estate-property alert.”

Elena closed her eyes.

Her grandmother’s pendant had been insured separately.

Every major piece in the family collection had unique registration.

Michael continued.

“Ms. Laurent is currently wearing it.”

“I know.”

“She claims Mr. Rossi gave it to her.”

“He couldn’t.”

“Because?”

“It isn’t his.”

Michael was silent.

Elena added.

“It isn’t mine personally either.”

“It belongs to the Eleanor Marlowe Heritage Trust.”

Thomas looked up at the name.

His mother.

Elena’s grandmother.

Michael said.

“That creates a problem.”

“No.”

Elena replied.

“It creates evidence.”

Police were not called immediately.

Instead, trust counsel documented the pendant.

Photographs from lobby cameras.

Images from Julian’s charity gala earlier that evening.

A social-media post Camila uploaded herself.

She had posed in Elena’s coat with the pendant clearly visible.

Caption.

SOME THINGS LOOK BETTER ON THE RIGHT WOMAN.

Elena stared at the photograph for a long time.

Thomas saw it.

“Don’t.”

“What?”

“Don’t let humiliation distract you from motive.”

Elena looked at him.

“You think the pendant matters beyond cruelty?”

“I think people steal symbolic things when they are trying to prove ownership.”

That sentence stayed with her.

At 3:00 a.m., an estate investigator searched historical access logs for Elena’s jewelry storage.

Someone had opened the private vault six months earlier.

Julian’s executive credential.

Elena’s stomach turned.

He had not merely found the pendant.

He had taken it.

Then spent months telling Elena she must have misplaced it.

She remembered tearing apart drawers.

Calling insurance.

Apologizing to staff for asking questions.

Julian sat beside her one evening and said.

“You’re becoming forgetful.”

Now she understood.

Gaslighting had not been a side effect of the affair.

It had been part of it.

Then investigators found another vault access.

Same night.

Julian removed more than jewelry.

A sealed envelope containing Elena’s original prenuptial agreement.

Thomas’s expression changed.

“Why would he need the original?”

Elena looked at her father.

“Unless he wanted to replace it.”

At 3:27 a.m., the general counsel called.

A second version of the prenup had just been found inside Julian’s executive legal file.

It carried Elena’s signature.

But Elena had never signed it.
