Chapter 17 - CAMILA RETURNED THE COAT

Camila requested one final meeting.
Elena nearly refused.
Then Camila’s attorney said she wanted to return something.
The cashmere coat.
Elena agreed.
Camila arrived without makeup.
Without designer jewelry.
Without Julian.
She placed the coat on a chair.
“I had it cleaned.”
Elena looked at it.
“I don’t want it.”
Camila blinked.
“It’s yours.”
“It was.”
Camila sat.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Camila said.
“I thought you knew about us.”
“No.”
“Julian said you had an arrangement.”
“He lied.”
“I know.”
“You still wore my jewelry.”
Camila looked down.
“Yes.”
“You still helped remove me from the company.”
“Yes.”
“You still stood behind him while security threw me out.”
Tears filled Camila’s eyes.
“Yes.”
Elena stayed calm.
“Then his lies do not erase your choices.”
“I know.”
It was the first useful thing Camila said.
She explained how Julian recruited her.
First, praise.
Then access.
Then promises.
He said Elena no longer cared about Aurelia.
Said Thomas controlled her.
Said the marriage survived only for appearances.
Camila wanted Julian’s life.
The penthouse.
The travel.
The status.
The idea of becoming the woman beside a global hotel mogul.
Then the lobby happened.
“I smiled.”
Camila whispered.
“I remember.”
“I thought I had finally won.”
Elena looked at her.
“What did you win?”
Camila laughed through tears.
“Apparently, a criminal subpoena.”
Elena almost smiled.
Camila had cooperated extensively.
She still faced consequences for theft of trust property and involvement in corporate misconduct.
But she was not the architect.
Julian was.
Before leaving, Camila touched the coat.
“What should I do with it?”
“Donate it.”
“To who?”
Elena thought.
“A women’s shelter.”
Camila looked surprised.
Then nodded.
Weeks later, Elena received a receipt.
The coat had been donated.
She never saw it again.
That felt right.
The pearl—no, emerald pendant—returned to the Marlowe heritage collection.
Elena did not wear it immediately.
For months, seeing it reminded her of Camila.
Then Thomas asked.
“Are you really going to let them steal your grandmother’s necklace without stealing it?”
Elena understood.
On the anniversary of Eleanor Marlowe’s first hotel opening, Elena wore the emerald pendant to the Aurelia employee gala.
Not as a victory symbol.
As reclamation.

The jewelry had a history before Julian.
It would have one after him.
