Chapter 9 - Adrian’s Version
Adrian was released on bail forty-eight hours later.
He immediately gave a statement through his attorney.
I had attacked him emotionally for months.
I had isolated him from Nora.
I had threatened to destroy his reputation.
At the gala, he claimed, he pushed me only after I lunged toward Vivienne.
The ballroom video showed otherwise.
His lawyer still repeated it.
Then Adrian released photographs.
Me crying.
Me yelling.
Me standing in the kitchen holding a broken plate.
The images looked terrible.
That was the point.
I remembered every one.
The broken plate came after Adrian threw my phone into the sink.
The yelling came after he locked me out of Nora’s nursery for two hours.
The crying came after he threatened to take her.
But photographs had no sound.
No before.
No after.
Only whatever story someone powerful placed around them.
Then Adrian released a recording.
My voice.
“I hate you.”
“I wish I had never married you.”
The clip ended.
Television hosts debated whether I was abusive too.
Strangers online called me unstable.
For one hour, I almost broke.
Then Lena called.
“Full recording?”
I knew where it was.
The watch archive.
We released nothing publicly.
We gave it to prosecutors.
The full audio began with Adrian saying.
“If you leave, I will tell the court you shook Nora.”
I answered.
“You know I never did.”
“You’ll prove that?”
Then came my voice.
“I hate you.”
“I wish I had never married you.”
Context.
Again.
Adrian’s entire defense depended on removing it.
Julian listened to the complete recording.
Then asked.
“How many more?”
“Seventy-three.”
His face went still.
“You recorded seventy-three incidents?”
“No.”
I looked down.
“I recorded seventy-three after I finally started counting.”
That night, Julian resigned from the Vale family board.
His letter was public.
I will not participate in any company structure that treats reputation as more valuable than safety.
The stock dropped seven percent.
Vivienne blamed me.
