Chapter 1 - The Watch

Protect Nora’s head.
Keep my left wrist free.
Do not let Adrian take the watch.
Those were the rules.
The watch looked ordinary.
Black leather band.
Small gold face.
A gift Adrian had given me on our second anniversary and forgotten about two weeks later.
He had no idea I had replaced the inside.
Six weeks earlier, Detective Lena Ortiz had connected it to an encrypted recording device and an emergency transmitter.
One long press sent my location.
Two presses started a live audio feed.
Three presses sent everything directly to Lena, my attorney, and one person Adrian believed would never turn against him.
His older brother, Julian.
Adrian tightened his hand around the back of my dress.
“Stand up.”
I kept my left wrist beneath Nora’s blanket.
My thumb found the side button.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
A faint vibration touched my skin.
Sent.
Adrian did not notice.
Vivienne did.
Her eyes dropped toward my wrist.
For the first time all evening, her expression changed.
She knew about the watch.
Not what it did.
But she knew I protected it.
“Take the baby,” she ordered.
Adrian reached for Nora.
I twisted away.
“No.”
His jaw tightened.
“You don’t get to decide anymore.”
A strange quiet moved through the ballroom.
Some of the guests were finally taking out their phones.
Vivienne noticed.
“Put those away.”
Nobody obeyed immediately.
She raised her voice.
“This is a private family matter.”
That sentence made something inside me break.
Not in fear.
In clarity.
I looked at the two hundred people around us.
Then I said the words Adrian had spent three years making me too frightened to say.
“He has been hurting me.”
Adrian froze.
Vivienne’s face hardened.
I continued.
“For three years.”
Someone gasped.
Adrian laughed.
It was too loud.
Too fast.
“She’s lying.”
“I have recordings.”
His smile disappeared.
Vivienne stepped forward.
“Claire.”
That was the first time she used my name all evening.
I looked at her.
“You should stop talking.”
She whispered.
I almost smiled.
“No.”
Adrian grabbed my wrist.
The wrong wrist.
My right.
I kept my left hand beneath Nora.
Then the ballroom doors opened.
Four hotel security officers entered.
Behind them came Detective Lena Ortiz.
And beside her stood Julian Vale.
Adrian’s older brother.
The man who had been missing from every family event for almost eight months.
Vivienne went completely white.
Julian looked at me on the marble floor.
Then at the blood on Nora’s blanket.
Then at Adrian.
His voice was quiet.
“Take your hands off her.”
Adrian released me.
May you like
Julian stepped closer.
“I heard everything.”
