Chapter 17 - The Trial

The criminal trial began fourteen months after the gala.

The ballroom video played first.

Two hundred guests.

Chandeliers.

Music stopping.

Me on the floor with Nora.

Vivienne pointing.

Teach her what happens when she forgets her place.

Then Adrian striking me.

The courtroom was silent.

The prosecution did not need dramatic language.

The video already had it.

Then came the watch audio.

My breathing.

Nora crying.

Adrian saying.

You should have signed the statement.

That sentence connected the violence to the fraud.

Celeste testified.

Sofia testified.

Melissa testified.

Julian testified.

I testified last.

Adrian’s attorney tried to make me angry.

“You hated your husband by then.”

“Yes.”

“You planned to leave him.”

“Yes.”

“You recorded him without telling him.”

“Yes.”

“You collected evidence for weeks.”

“Yes.”

He leaned closer.

“So the gala was a trap.”

“No.”

“What would you call it?”

“A failed attempt to leave safely.”

He paused.

Then asked.

“Why didn’t you simply walk out earlier?”

That question had followed me everywhere.

Why stay?

Why return?

Why hide bruises?

Why wait?

I looked at the jury.

“Because leaving an abusive person is not one door.”

“It is money.”

“Custody.”

“Documents.”

“Safety.”

“Evidence.”

“Where you sleep.”

“Who believes you.”

“And whether the person you are leaving has spent years preparing to punish you for trying.”

The attorney stopped.

He had wanted shame.

He got context.

Vivienne did not testify.

Adrian did.

That was his mistake.

He said he never intended to hurt me.

The prosecutor played seventy-three recordings of intention arriving one threat at a time.
