Chapter 13 - The Archive

Henry’s private archive occupied a locked room beneath Vale Holdings headquarters.

Three people originally had access.

Henry.

Julian.

Vivienne.

After Henry died, Vivienne changed the security system.

Julian’s access stopped working.

He never challenged it.

Until now.

The board authorized an independent review before the removal vote.

That gave auditors legal access.

Inside the archive were boxes Henry had labeled by year.

Property deals.

Board notes.

Family trusts.

Then one box.

ADRIAN - PRIVATE.

Julian stared at it for a long time.

Inside were reports from a private investigator Henry hired three years earlier.

Photographs showed Adrian entering an apartment building with a woman named Celeste Ward.

Bank records showed regular transfers.

I expected an affair.

I almost felt relieved.

Then Rachel opened another file.

Celeste was not a girlfriend.

She ran Meridian Child & Family Consultants.

The same company.

For three years, Adrian had paid her to build confidential behavioral profiles on people who threatened him.

Employees.

Business partners.

Me.

Julian.

Even Henry.

The file on me began eight months after my wedding.

Before Nora.

Before I ever threatened divorce.

Notes described my family finances.

My medical history.

My friendships.

My vulnerabilities.

One line read.

CLAIRE IS FINANCIALLY DEPENDENT.

LIMIT ACCESS TO PERSONAL FUNDS.

I stopped breathing.

Three months later, Adrian had convinced me to close my old bank account because marriage meant no secrets.

Another note.

ISOLATE FROM SISTER AFTER CONFLICT.

Weeks later, Adrian engineered an argument between me and my sister and encouraged me to stop speaking to her.

It had not been spontaneous.

It had been strategy.

I sat down.

For years, I thought abuse grew slowly because Adrian lost control.

The file showed something worse.

He had been studying how to gain it.

Julian found his own profile.

RESISTANT TO FAMILY AUTHORITY.

STRONG MORAL IDENTITY.

REMOVE THROUGH REPUTATIONAL EVENT IF NECESSARY.

He looked at me.

“Dad knew all of this.”

Rachel shook her head.

“He discovered it.”

“When?”

The final report was dated nine days before Henry died.
