Chapter 14 - The Board Meeting

The boardroom was full when Adrian arrived.

He expected Julian to be fighting for his seat.

Instead, federal investigators were waiting outside.

The board’s independent counsel presented Henry’s archive.

Meridian payments.

False behavioral profiles.

Hidden company expenditures.

Private surveillance.

Several directors looked sick.

Adrian remained calm.

“This is corporate security.”

Julian laughed.

“You paid a private consultant to profile your wife’s medical vulnerabilities.”

“I was protecting the family.”

“From your wife?”

Adrian’s eyes moved toward me.

I attended by video from Rachel’s office.

He hated that.

He wanted me physically in rooms he controlled.

Not anymore.

Then the auditors presented evidence that Vale Holdings funds had paid for Meridian’s work.

That meant Adrian had used company money for private coercion.

The board suspended him immediately.

Vivienne stood.

“You cannot remove my son based on accusations from an angry wife.”

One director turned toward her.

“We are removing him based on invoices he signed.”

Vivienne looked around.

Her influence had always depended on people fearing social exclusion.

Now fear had changed sides.

The vote was unanimous.

Adrian lost his executive authority.

Julian remained.

Then Lena entered our office.

She looked at me.

“They are charging Vivienne.”

My chest tightened.

“For what?”

“Conspiracy related to the fraudulent incapacity plan.”

“Witness intimidation involving Sofia.”

“And obstruction related to Henry’s medical incident.”

I did not celebrate.

I thought I would.

Instead, I felt tired.

Adrian called me ten minutes later.

The protective order prohibited direct contact.

I did not answer.

He left a voicemail.

“You think you won.”

Then another.

“When this is over, Nora will know what you did to her family.”

Then a third.

“I can still fix this if you stop.”

Lena listened.

She saved all three.

Adrian still believed reconciliation meant surrender.

Then the fourth voicemail arrived.

Different voice.

Whispering.

“I know where you’re staying.”

May you like

Lena’s expression changed.

“That isn’t Adrian.”
