Chapter 18 - Guilty
The jury deliberated for two days.
Adrian was convicted of assault.
Coercive fraud.
Conspiracy related to the incapacity scheme.
Misuse of company funds.
Witness tampering.
And charges connected to Henry’s medical treatment and delayed care.
Vivienne was convicted of conspiracy, obstruction, witness intimidation, and reckless conduct connected to Henry’s death.
Neither conviction felt like victory.
Henry was still dead.
My marriage was still gone.
Nora would still someday ask why her father was not at school concerts.
But truth had finally acquired consequences.
At sentencing, Vivienne asked to speak.
She turned toward me.
“I believed I was protecting my family.”
I did not react.
She continued.
“I thought scandal was something done to us.”
“I did not understand that sometimes scandal is simply the name wealthy people give consequences.”
Julian lowered his head.
Vivienne looked toward Nora, who was not in court.
“I failed my husband.”
“My son.”
“My daughter-in-law.”
“My granddaughter.”
Then she sat.
Adrian spoke next.
He did not apologize.
Not really.
He said pressure changed him.
Business changed him.
Fatherhood frightened him.
My distance enraged him.
Every sentence still contained someone else.
Then he looked at me.
“I loved you.”
I answered before I could stop myself.
“No.”
The judge looked toward me.
I apologized.
But Adrian had heard.
He looked almost shocked.
Maybe Henry had been right.
Adrian had spent his life calling possession love.
The court gave him years in prison.
Vivienne received a shorter sentence because of her age and lesser direct role.
Vale Holdings removed both permanently from control.
Nora’s shares remained protected.
Julian became temporary chair.
He created an independent board before anyone asked.
