Chapter 5 - Henry’s Last Warning

Henry Vale had been dying of pancreatic cancer.

The family told everyone his final weeks were peaceful.

Julian told me that was a lie.

Henry had spent those weeks changing the company structure.

He had discovered Adrian was diverting money from a hotel development fund.

Not millions.

At first.

Then more.

Henry confronted him.

Adrian blamed accounting errors.

Vivienne defended Adrian.

Henry did not believe either of them.

So he placed Nora’s shares outside their control.

“How did he know I was pregnant?”

I asked.

Julian smiled faintly.

“You told him before anyone else.”

I remembered.

Henry had been in the hospital.

Adrian was traveling.

I visited alone.

I told Henry because I could not keep the secret another day.

He cried.

He asked whether I had chosen names.

That afternoon was one of my last good memories of the Vale family.

Julian continued.

“Dad recorded something for you.”

My chest tightened.

“Where?”

“He gave it to me.”

“You had it for six months?”

“I was waiting until I was sure Vivienne couldn’t get to it.”

I stared at him.

“I’m tired of everyone deciding when I can handle the truth.”

Julian nodded.

“You’re right.”

He took a small drive from his pocket.

Henry appeared on the hospital screen.

Thin.

Pale.

Still unmistakably himself.

“Claire.”

My eyes filled immediately.

“If you are watching this, then either Julian finally learned to follow instructions, or everything went badly.”

Despite myself, I laughed.

Henry continued.

“Adrian has always mistaken possession for love.”

“He did it with toys.”

“Then friends.”

“Then the company.”

My smile disappeared.

“I am afraid he may eventually do it with you.”

Julian looked down.

Henry continued.

“Vivienne protects him because she believes consequences are humiliation.”

“She is wrong.”

Then Henry leaned closer.

“If Adrian ever asks you to sign anything related to your mental health, custody, or Nora’s trust, do not sign.”

My whole body went cold.

Henry knew.

Months before Nora was born.

He knew exactly what Adrian might do.

Then Henry said.

“There is a file in my old study.”

“Behind the west bookcase.”

“It contains evidence I never had the courage to use.”

“Use it if you need to.”

The recording ended.

Julian looked at me.

“The study is still sealed.”

“Where?”

“At the Vale estate.”

I sat straighter.

May you like

Vivienne lived there.

And by sunrise, she would know Henry had left me something.
