Chapter 5 - THE WEDDING TRUST
Arthur had created the Cross-Vale Marital Trust six months after the engagement.
It was generous.
Maybe too generous.
If the marriage took place, Vivienne would receive a large lifetime income interest.
She would also receive a substantial residence allowance and certain investment rights.
If Arthur died after marriage, her position became stronger.
But not controlling.
His children’s foundation and long-term company trust held the majority.
Then three weeks before the gala, Arthur discovered something.
Vivienne had been asking his estate administrators about survivorship provisions.
Not once.
Repeatedly.
She asked what happened if Arthur died before the wedding.
Then after.
Then before the first anniversary.
Then without children from their marriage.
Arthur confronted her lightly.
She laughed.
“Sophisticated women read documents.”
He liked that answer at the time.
Then he asked his lawyer to revise the trust.
Not because he suspected murder.
Because he disliked the fixation.
The new draft reduced Vivienne’s immediate control over liquid assets.
It also removed her as successor adviser to the Vale Family Foundation.
Arthur had planned to discuss it with her after the gala.
He never got the chance.
Now the envelope was missing.
Detective Ortiz asked.
“Who knew the revisions were happening?”
“Estate counsel.”
“My private office manager.”
“Me.”
“Possibly Miles.”
“Why Miles?”
“He reviews key-person insurance and succession planning for the company.”
Ortiz’s eyes sharpened.
“Key-person insurance?”
Vale Quantum carried enormous insurance coverage on Arthur because his death could temporarily damage the company.
The company itself was beneficiary.
But Arthur also held private coverage.
One policy named a trust.
The trust would eventually benefit Vivienne if they married.
Then Arthur remembered another document.
A supplemental policy.
$250 million.
Purchased eight months earlier.
He had approved it during a broader estate restructuring.
Beneficiary.
Vale Continuity Holdings.
Who controlled Vale Continuity Holdings after Arthur’s death?
Temporarily.
Miles Davenport.
Arthur stood.
Vivienne had a personal motive.
Miles had a corporate one.
Then Detective Ortiz’s phone rang.
She listened.
Her expression changed.
Miles’s car had been found near San Francisco International Airport.
Empty.
No Miles.
His passport had been used at a private terminal.
Destination unknown.
Arthur looked at the dawn light beginning to touch the windows.
