Chapter 15 - VIVIENNE FINALLY TOLD THE TRUTH
Vivienne changed her plea after Miles’s messages became impossible to explain.
Her attorney negotiated.
No complete immunity.
No magical escape.
Cooperation mattered.
Responsibility still mattered.
She admitted she knew the substance was intended to cause Arthur catastrophic harm.
She admitted Miles told her the death could appear natural.
She admitted stealing Arthur’s estate drafts.
She admitted helping build Cross Advisory.
She admitted receiving millions through contracts approved by Miles.
Then prosecutors asked the question Arthur wanted answered.
“When did you decide Arthur had to die?”
Vivienne cried.
Not delicately.
Not beautifully.
She looked exhausted.
“The night I saw the new trust.”
“Why?”
“He was taking everything back.”
The prosecutor corrected her.
“Was it his?”
Vivienne stopped.
“Yes.”
“So he wasn’t taking your property.”
“No.”
“He was reducing what you might receive later.”
“Yes.”
“And that justified killing him?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
Vivienne whispered.
“Because Miles said once Arthur stopped trusting me, it was over anyway.”
That sentence revealed how thoroughly she had surrendered her judgment.
If love ended.
Take the money.
If trust ended.
Take control.
If Arthur said no.
Remove Arthur.
Then she admitted one more truth.
She had expected to marry Miles eventually.
Arthur almost laughed when Ortiz told him.
Miles had never intended that.
Vivienne learned during cooperation.
For the first time, she understood she had helped plan Arthur’s death for a future that did not exist.
