Chapter 14 - THE WEDDING DATE

June 14 arrived anyway.
The ballroom at Arthur’s mansion remained empty.
The wedding flowers had been canceled.
The cathedral reservation released.
Caterers paid.
Guests notified weeks earlier.
Arthur spent the morning alone.
Not dramatically.
He made coffee.
Read emails.
Went for a walk.
Then found the engraved ring in his desk.
FOREVER BEGINS JUNE 14.
He almost threw it away.
Instead, he placed it inside the evidence archive returned by investigators.
Not because he wanted to keep the relationship.
Because history becomes dangerous when people edit out the parts that hurt.
At noon, Arthur visited his mother’s grave.
He did not tell anyone.
His mother had hated Vivienne.
Not openly.
She had simply asked Arthur once.
“Does she love you when you say no?”
Arthur had laughed.
“What does that mean?”
His mother answered.
“People reveal themselves around boundaries.”
He remembered the conversation now.
Arthur had rarely told Vivienne no.
When he finally changed the trust.
When he finally reduced Miles’s authority.
The conspiracy moved immediately.
Two boundaries.
One attempted death.
His mother had been right.
Again, there was no satisfaction in that.
Arthur sat beside the grave.
“I almost married her.”
The wind moved through the trees.
No answer.
He smiled sadly.
“Good talk.”
Then Marcus called.
Investigators had recovered one final wedding document.
Vivienne had prepared a speech.
Arthur expected romance.
It began that way.
Then one line stood out.
Arthur taught me that an empire is not what one person owns.
It is what two people are brave enough to build together.
Arthur laughed when he read it.
She planned to speak about building together while preparing to inherit alone.
That evening, instead of a wedding reception, Arthur hosted no one.
Sarah sent one text.
HOPE TODAY WASN’T TOO AWFUL.
Arthur answered.
BETTER THAN THE ALTERNATIVE.
She replied.
May you like
FAIR.
That was enough.
