Chapter 3 - MILES LEFT BEFORE THE POLICE ARRIVED

Marcus found the footage.
At 10:14 p.m., Sarah knocked the glass from Arthur’s hand.
At 10:16, Vivienne slapped Sarah.
At 10:18, Marcus sealed the ballroom.
At 10:19, Miles Davenport walked through a staff corridor.
At 10:21, he entered the underground garage.
At 10:23, his car left through a maintenance gate.
The main gates had been locked.
The maintenance gate had not.
Someone used an executive override.
Miles.
Arthur watched the footage inside his library.
Detective Ortiz stood beside him.
“Why would your CFO leave?”
Arthur did not answer immediately.
Because Miles never left events early.
Not board dinners.
Not investor meetings.
Not even the night his own father died.
He was obsessive about appearances.
And tonight he had disappeared two minutes after Arthur’s drink hit the floor.
Ortiz asked.
“Did Mr. Davenport know about your relationship with Ms. Cross?”
“Of course.”
“How well?”
“He introduced us.”
The sentence changed the room.
Vivienne and Arthur had met at a technology foundation event eighteen months earlier.
Miles invited her.
He said she was brilliant.
A former luxury-brand executive with charitable connections.
She made Arthur laugh.
That had been rare after his first marriage ended.
Vivienne understood rooms.
People.
Status.
She seemed interested in Arthur without being intimidated by him.
Within six months, they were together.
Within a year, engaged.
Miles had toasted them.
Arthur remembered the exact words.
“To perfect timing.”
Now those words felt different.
Ortiz asked.
“Any financial reason Mr. Davenport might benefit from your death?”
Arthur almost said no.
Then stopped.
Vale Quantum Systems was scheduled for a major board vote the next morning.
A restructuring.
Arthur had planned to announce that Miles would lose control over acquisition approvals.
Why?
Because an internal audit found irregular vendor payments.
Not enough to accuse him of fraud.
Enough to remove authority temporarily.
Miles knew the audit existed.
He did not know Arthur planned to act tomorrow.
Or Arthur had thought he did not know.
Then Marcus entered.
“We recovered private-bar footage.”
The video showed exactly what Sarah described.
Vivienne preparing Arthur’s first drink.
Looking around.
Adding something.
Then Miles entering the frame.
Not approaching her.
Not speaking.
Just passing behind her.
As he walked by, he touched the edge of the bar twice.
Vivienne looked at him.
Then continued.
Ortiz replayed it.
“Signal?”
Arthur whispered.
“Maybe.”
Then another camera showed Miles twenty minutes later near the service sink.
Ethan had just dumped Arthur’s first drink.
Miles watched.
Then walked away.
That was when Arthur understood something worse.
May you like
Vivienne may have been the hand near the glass.
But she had not built the plan alone.
