Chapter 16 - THE BOARD VOTED WITHOUT ARTHUR

Vale Quantum’s board met six months later.

One major agenda item.

Should Arthur return to full executive authority?

He expected yes.

Instead, the governance committee proposed something else.

Split CEO and chair.

Arthur remain CEO.

Independent chair appointed.

Acquisition authority distributed.

Arthur listened.

Five years earlier, he would have considered it an insult.

Now he voted for it.

The motion passed unanimously.

Including his vote.

Vale Quantum survived.

Stock recovered.

The internal audit identified more than $140 million in questionable or fraudulent transactions connected to Miles’s network.

Much was recovered through asset seizures, insurance, settlements, and restitution actions.

Some was gone.

The company accepted the loss publicly.

No fantasy accounting.

No pretending.

Arthur created a contractor protection office.

Thomas Miller’s corrected personnel record became part of compliance training.

Sarah’s name did not.

By her request.

Then Arthur sold the mansion.

Everyone assumed trauma.

That was only part.

The ballroom no longer felt like home.

It felt like a stage built for people he had stopped wanting to impress.

He bought a smaller house overlooking the bay.

Still expensive.

He was still a billionaire.

But smaller enough that he knew which rooms were empty.

That mattered.
