Chapter 19 - SARAH’S CHOICE
Arthur offered Sarah a full-time position at Vale Quantum.
Not as a waitress.
Not as a symbolic security mascot.
A real job inside corporate risk operations.
She had gone back to school part-time after her father died.
Information systems.
Security compliance.
Arthur did not know that until Marcus told him.
Sarah stared at the offer.
“You checked my education?”
“With permission from HR.”
She smiled.
“Good answer.”
Then she surprised him.
“I want to interview.”
Arthur frowned.
“For the job?”
“Yes.”
“I’m offering it.”
“I know.”
“But if I get a job because I saved you, I’ll always wonder whether I earned it.”
Arthur almost argued.
Then stopped.
Boundary.
His mother’s old lesson.
“Fine.”
“You interview.”
Sarah did.
Three people interviewed her.
Arthur was not one of them.
She got the job.
Later, she told him.
“That felt better.”
He believed her.
Sarah eventually specialized in internal incident review.
Not because she had perfect instincts.
Because she understood evidence.
Context.
And the danger of dismissing uncomfortable people too early.
Years later, employees knew her as Sarah Miller from risk integrity.
