Arthur reopened Thomas Miller’s case.
Seven years old.
Archived.
Supposedly resolved.
It contained six complaints.
Restricted vendor access.
After-hours server rooms.
Unlogged deliveries.
Miles bypassing approval.
Bellamy calling the concerns “procedural misunderstandings.”
Then a final HR recommendation.
TERMINATION FOR DISRUPTIVE CONDUCT.
Arthur’s electronic approval sat beneath it.
He stared at his own name.
One click.
A man lost his career.
Why?
Because Arthur trusted the process.
Sarah’s father had been right.
Not about murder.
About access.
Miles had been building private vendor channels for years.
Some later became the same shell companies involved in current fraud.
If Thomas had been believed, the network might have been discovered long before Vivienne entered Arthur’s life.
Arthur asked the board to issue a posthumous correction.
Not a sentimental plaque.
An official personnel record.
Thomas Miller’s termination was reversed.
Back pay and retirement calculations were reviewed for the estate.
Sarah cried when Arthur told her.
“That’s not why I saved you.”
“I know.”
“This isn’t payment.”
“I know.”
“It should have happened years ago.”
Sarah nodded.
Then Arthur did something harder.
He addressed employees.
No details of the criminal investigation.
No dramatic confession.
He simply said.
“A security employee raised concerns seven years ago.”
“The company dismissed him.”
“Those concerns were valid.”
“I approved the dismissal.”
“That failure belongs partly to me.”
Vale Quantum’s stock dropped three percent that morning.
Commentators called the statement reckless.
Arthur did not regret it.
For years, he believed leadership meant preventing panic.
Now he understood preventing panic can become another name for preventing truth.
Then the reopened file revealed something else.
Thomas had listed one unknown woman entering restricted areas with Miles.
Seven years earlier.
The visitor badge used the name.
