Chapter 1 - THE GLASS ON THE FLOOR

The crystal glass hit the marble before Arthur Vale understood why Sarah had touched it.

Amber liquid splashed across the white tablecloth.

Ice slid beneath a silver chair.

A hundred conversations stopped at once.

Then Vivienne Cross slapped Sarah across the face.

The sound cut through the ballroom.

Sarah stumbled sideways.

Her serving tray crashed beside her.

Arthur rose slowly from his chair.

“Vivienne.”

His voice was quiet.

That was worse than shouting.

Vivienne’s chest rose beneath her silver evening gown.

“She assaulted you.”

Sarah pressed one hand against her cheek.

“No, sir.”

Her voice trembled.

“I stopped you from drinking that.”

Vivienne laughed.

“She’s insane.”

Sarah reached into the apron pocket of her uniform.

Her fingers were shaking so badly she almost dropped her phone.

“I recorded something.”

Arthur stared at her.

“What?”

Sarah unlocked the screen.

Vivienne moved forward.

“Arthur, this is humiliating.”

He raised one hand.

“Stop.”

For the first time that night, his fiancée obeyed.

Sarah opened a video.

The image shook slightly.

It had been recorded from behind a flower arrangement near the private bar.

Vivienne stood beside Arthur’s table.

She believed no one was watching.

Her eyes moved toward the ballroom entrance.

Then toward Arthur, who was speaking with investors thirty feet away.

She removed a tiny container from her evening clutch.

She opened it.

Shielded the movement with her body.

Then tipped something into Arthur’s iced scotch.

Sarah’s frightened breathing could be heard behind the camera.

The recording ended.

Nobody in the ballroom moved.

Arthur watched it again.

Then a third time.

Vivienne finally spoke.

“That proves nothing.”

Arthur looked at the shattered glass.

Then at her.

“What did you put in my drink?”

“Nothing.”

Sarah whispered.

“I saw her.”

Vivienne spun toward her.

“You’re a waitress.”

Sarah flinched.

Arthur did not.

He looked toward his head of security.

“Marcus.”

Marcus Hale was already moving.

“Seal the room.”

Vivienne stared at Arthur.

“You cannot be serious.”

“No guest leaves.”

Arthur’s voice stayed calm.

“No staff leaves.”

“No glass is cleaned.”

“No tablecloth is removed.”

“And no one touches what’s on that floor.”

Vivienne’s face changed.

For the first time, anger gave way to fear.

Someone near the ballroom doors whispered.

“Police?”

Arthur answered without looking away from Vivienne.

“Yes.”

Vivienne took one step backward.

“Arthur.”

“You’re overreacting.”

He stared at the woman he was supposed to marry in twelve days.

“No.”

“I almost drank it.”

Then Sarah said something that made the room even quieter.

May you like

“Sir.”

“That wasn’t the first glass she touched tonight.”
