Chapter 8 - The Woman Who Left the Hospital
Evelyn left the hospital in a nurse’s coat.
A security camera captured her entering a private elevator with Dr. Mercer.
The psychiatrist had arrived using a consultant badge.
He also carried a medical cooler.
Vance obtained warrants for Mercer’s clinic, home, and vehicles.
His clinic records showed that he had prepared diagnoses for Claire, Serena, Malcolm, and even Julian.
Each report remained unsigned.
Each could be activated if the person became inconvenient.
Serena read her own file inside Naomi’s office.
It described delusions, obsessive jealousy, and alcohol dependency.
None of it was true.
“I thought Evelyn loved me,” she whispered.
Julian stood beside her.
“She loves obedience.”
Claire looked at him.
“That is not love.”
“I know that now.”
Mercer’s clinic also contained Daniel’s sealed medical file.
The official hospital record said he remained unconscious for three days after the boating accident.
Mercer’s private notes told another story.
Daniel regained consciousness twice.
The first time, he asked for Claire.
The second time, he asked whether his mother had been arrested.
Mercer increased his sedative dose after both episodes.
Daniel died twelve hours later.
Claire’s hand shook as she read.
“You told me he never woke up,” she said to Julian.
“That is what Mother told me.”
Mercer’s notes listed Evelyn as the person authorizing restricted visitors.
Claire had been barred from the room while her husband called for her.
The revelation stripped away the last accidental explanation.
Evelyn had controlled Daniel’s final away the last accidental hours.
Vance requested an emergency review of the autopsy.
Daniel had been cremated.
No body remained.
Then Naomi found a reference in Mercer’s billing system.
Tissue retention fee.
Northlake Pathology Storage.
A lab had preserved blood and tissue samples from Daniel before cremation.
Vance sent agents immediately.
Northlake’s storage manager confirmed the samples still existed.
He also reported that someone had called that morning offering fifty thousand dollars to destroy them.
The caller used the name Evelyn Harrow.
The samples were transferred into police custody.
Preliminary testing revealed an unusual combination of sedatives and digitalis.
Daniel did not die only from injuries.
He had been poisoned.
Claire sat alone in Naomi’s conference room after everyone left.
She pressed both hands against her face.
For four years, she had blamed herself for not answering Daniel’s call quickly enough.
She had imagined the storm.
The dark water.
Her husband alone.
The truth was worse.
He survived the boat.
He reached the hospital.
He called for her.
Evelyn prevented her from entering.
Julian sat across from Claire.
“I defended her.”
Claire looked up.
“I asked you to leave the hospital.”
“I repeated everything she told me.”
“Yes.”
“I helped her isolate you.”
“Yes.”
His face twisted.
“I am sorry.”
The apology did not repair anything.
But it did not ask Claire to pretend nothing happened.
“I believe you are sorry,” she said.
“I do not know whether I trust you.”
Julian nodded.
“That is fair.”
His phone vibrated.
A message from Evelyn appeared.
IF YOU WANT THE TRUTH ABOUT DANIEL, COME TO THE MARINA ALONE.
