Chapter 10 - Fire on the Water
The blast threw Julian into the rail.
Mercer fell overboard.
Evelyn disappeared behind flames.
Police vessels moved alongside the sailboat.
Fire crews sprayed the deck.
Claire left the harbor office before anyone could stop her.
She reached the dock as officers carried Julian ashore.
His face was burned near the temple.
He remained conscious.
“Mother is still aboard,” he said.
Vance ordered Claire back.
A second explosion shook the boat.
Part of the mast collapsed into the water.
Firefighters found Mercer clinging to a rope near the stern.
They arrested him after treatment.
Evelyn was not inside the cabin.
A rescue team discovered the emergency dinghy missing.
She had triggered the fire as a distraction and escaped through the marina channel.
The memory card survived.
An officer found it wedged beneath a deck cleat.
Lily’s crown camera had recorded more than the ballroom conversation.
After Claire left the banquet room, the device continued running inside Harris’s hand.
It captured Evelyn whispering to Conrad before the ambulance arrived.
The girl heard us.
Move the warrant forward.
Take her before Claire reaches the trust.
The recording then captured Conrad asking about Daniel’s original ledger.
Evelyn answered.
It is where he taught Lily to count the white birds.
Claire heard the phrase and understood immediately.
Daniel used to take Lily to an abandoned observatory on Harrow land.
White pigeons nested in the upper dome.
He taught her to count them while Claire attended foundation meetings.
Evelyn believed the ledger was hidden there.
Police reached the observatory before midnight.
The front door stood open.
Fresh footprints crossed the dust.
Inside the dome, dozens of white feathers covered the floor.
Lily had once painted numbers beneath the window ledges.
Daniel turned every visit into a game.
One.
Two.
Three.
Four.
The number seven had been painted twice.
Claire pressed the second seven.
A section of wall opened.
Inside was a leather ledger wrapped in plastic.
Daniel’s handwriting filled every page.
Payments to Conrad.
Payments to Mercer.
Transfers authorized by Evelyn.
Bribes to marina employees.
A private payment made the morning after the boat accident to a deckhand named Peter Knox.
Vance searched the name.
Knox had supposedly died from an overdose three years earlier.
He was alive.
He had entered witness protection in another state after reporting threats from an unknown family.
Claire read Daniel’s final entry.
If anything happens to me, Claire must know she was right.
Mother has controlled Julian through fear and me through guilt.
She will try to use Lily because she cannot imagine loving a child without owning her future.
The final page held a message for Julian.
You are not weak because you want peace.
You become weak only when peace requires someone else’s silence.
Julian read the words from his hospital bed.
He turned his face away.
The ledger gave prosecutors enough to charge Evelyn with conspiracy, fraud, kidnapping, attempted guardianship abuse, and evidence tampering.
It still did not prove she killed Daniel.
