Chapter 11 - The Deckhand Who Survived
Peter Knox lived under the name Aaron Fields in a small town in Vermont.
Federal marshals reached his house hours after the ledger was found.
The front door stood open.
His wife and son were missing.
A message on the kitchen table directed him to return to Harrow County.
Knox had left voluntarily to save them.
Evelyn’s network remained active despite the arrests.
Conrad’s attorney made the calls.
A Harrow Foundation driver provided the vehicle.
A retired detective cleared the route.
Money continued working even after its owner began running out of places to hide.
Vance traced the vehicle toward an abandoned family lodge in the mountains.
Claire insisted on accompanying the operation.
This time, Vance agreed to let her remain at the command post.
Lily stayed with Serena under police protection.
Julian remained hospitalized.
At the lodge, thermal cameras detected five people.
Evelyn.
Knox.
His wife.
His son.
And an armed man.
The armed man was Malcolm Reed.
Claire stared at the image.
The trustee who recorded the ballroom.
Daniel’s friend.
The man who had helped verify the original trust.
Naomi looked equally shocked.
Vance called him.
Malcolm answered.
“I have no choice.”
“You always have a choice,” Vance said.
“Evelyn has my daughter.”
“Your daughter is in college.”
“She was taken yesterday.”
A second hostage existed somewhere else.
Evelyn had built layers again.
If Malcolm refused, his daughter died.
If police entered, Knox’s family died.
Claire took the phone.
“Malcolm.”
He began crying.
“I am sorry.”
“Daniel trusted you.”
“I know.”
“Then trust what he believed about you.”
“What did he believe?”
“That fear was not the same as consent.”
Claire looked toward Vance.
She wrote a question on paper.
Where would his daughter feel safe?
Claire asked.
Malcolm’s breathing changed.
“The old rowing club.”
Police sent a team.
They found Malcolm’s daughter locked inside a storage room with one guard.
She was rescued quietly.
Claire returned to the phone.
“She is safe.”
Malcolm did not answer for several seconds.
Then he lowered his weapon.
Inside the lodge, Evelyn saw the movement.
She struck Knox’s wife and ran toward the rear door.
Police entered.
The remaining guard surrendered.
Knox and his family survived.
Evelyn escaped on a snowmobile hidden behind the lodge.
Malcolm was arrested but immediately cooperated.
Knox gave his statement.
He had been aboard Daniel’s boat.
Conrad loosened the steering assembly.
Evelyn cut the emergency radio cable.
During the storm, Daniel confronted them.
Conrad struck him with a winch handle.
Daniel fell and hit the deck.
He remained alive.
Knox wanted to call for rescue.
Evelyn ordered him to wait until Daniel’s body temperature dropped and the storm damaged more evidence.
They waited forty-three minutes.
At the hospital, Daniel regained consciousness.
Evelyn paid Mercer to increase the sedatives and change the toxicology request.
Knox’s testimony established attempted murder on the boat.
Mercer’s treatment completed it.
Daniel’s death had not been an accident.
It had been a sequence of decisions.
At the end of his statement, Knox looked at Claire.
“He asked me to tell you something.”
