Chapter 5 - The Dead Judge’s Signature

Claire was released before dawn.
The assault charge remained under review, but the warrant itself became evidence of fraud.
The county prosecutor assigned an independent investigator named Mara Vance.
She had no ties to the Harrow Foundation.
That made Evelyn’s attorneys object immediately.
Claire returned to Naomi’s office rather than Harrow House.
Lily slept there beneath a wool coat while Serena sat beside her.
Julian paced near the windows.
He had received sixteen calls from his mother’s hospital room.
He answered none.
Investigator Vance arrived with two detectives.
She reviewed the crown recording, Malcolm’s video, Lily’s wrist photographs, and the forged warrant.
Then she asked Claire about Daniel.
“The guardianship scheme gives us motive for financial fraud,” Vance said.
“It does not prove murder.”
“I know.”
“Tell me everything you have never told law enforcement.”
Claire began with the final call.
She described Daniel’s fear during the weeks before the boat accident.
He had discovered irregularities inside the Harrow Foundation’s children’s housing program.
Properties purchased for shelters had been transferred into private companies.
Millions disappeared through consulting contracts.
Conrad Pike authorized most payments.
Evelyn approved them.
Daniel planned to remove both from control.
“He also told me he found something connected to his father’s death,” Claire said.
Julian stopped pacing.
“Our father died from a heart attack.”
“That is what your mother said.”
Julian stared at her.
Claire opened Daniel’s old notebook.
One page contained three initials.
E.H.
C.P.
D.M.
Below them, Daniel had written:
FATHER FOUND THE SECOND LEDGER.
DR. MERCER CHANGED THE REPORT.
Julian rubbed both hands across his face.
Dr. Stephen Mercer had treated their father.
He also prepared the false guardianship evaluation against Claire.
Vance photographed the page.
“Where did Daniel keep the ledger?”
“I do not know.”
“Did he mention a location?”
“He said Lily would lead me to it when I was ready.”
Everyone looked toward the sleeping child.
Claire hated the idea that Daniel had placed any part of the burden near her.
Then Serena whispered.
“The garden.”
Claire turned.
“What?”
“Lily always searches the old garden when she visits.”
“She says her father left her a kingdom under the white tree.”
Claire remembered.
Daniel had planted a white dogwood for Lily’s first birthday.
After his death, Evelyn fenced off that section of the garden for renovations that never happened.
Julian called Harris.
No answer.
A second call reached the estate kitchen.
The housekeeper answered.
Harris had gone toward the old garden an hour earlier after noticing men near the tree.
Investigator Vance stood.
“We need a warrant.”
Julian took his coat.
“It is my property too.”
“No,” Claire said.
“It belongs to Lily.”
They reached Harrow House as sunrise colored the windows.
The old garden gate stood open.
Fresh tire tracks crossed the lawn.
Beneath the dogwood, the ground had been dug apart.
May you like
Harris lay unconscious beside an empty metal container.
And someone had taken Lily from Naomi’s car.
