Chapter 14 - The Ceremony Evelyn Chose

Evelyn did not flee farther south.
She returned to Harrow House.
She entered through a maintenance tunnel built beneath the original wine cellar.
Harris discovered the open passage after an alarm activated near dawn.
By the time police arrived, Evelyn had moved through the house.
She placed white flowers throughout the ballroom.
She repaired the bent gold chair.
She arranged Lily’s remaining crown beads across the presentation table.
Then she sent invitations from the foundation’s email account.
THE FINAL HARROW CEREMONY.
Trustees, journalists, police, and family members received them.
Claire received a separate message.
Bring Lily at noon.
Come without police.
Daniel’s final recording will be played.
Claire knew Evelyn wanted an audience.
The original banquet had ended in humiliation.
She planned to replace that memory with one she controlled.
Police searched the house remotely.
Cameras showed wires near the ballroom doors.
The vial stolen from the clinic was missing.
Vance refused to allow Lily anywhere near the estate.
Claire agreed.
They sent an empty vehicle toward the front gate while Claire entered through the tunnel with a tactical team.
Julian insisted on joining.
Vance denied him.
He entered anyway through a second service passage he remembered from childhood.
Inside the ballroom, Evelyn stood beneath the chandeliers wearing the same crimson gown from the original ceremony.
One side had been repaired where paramedics cut the fabric.
A projector displayed Daniel’s face on the wall.
Claire stepped from the hallway.
“Where is the recording?”
Evelyn smiled.
“You came without Lily.”
“I will never bring her to you again.”
Evelyn held up a syringe.
“Then you will answer for her.”
The ballroom doors locked.
Claire heard the mechanism engage.
Police began cutting power from outside.
Evelyn touched the projector control.
Daniel appeared on-screen.
The video was unfamiliar.
He sat inside the hospital.
His face was bruised.
His speech was slow from medication.
“Mother,” he said.
“I signed the transfers.”
“I helped you.”
Evelyn looked at Claire.
“He was not your hero.”
“I know.”
The answer unsettled her.
Claire continued.
“He hurt people.”
“He also tried to stop.”
“You do not own either truth.”
Evelyn’s hand tightened around the syringe.
“You turned Lily against me.”
“No.”
“You frightened her.”
“She will forget.”
“She will heal.”
Evelyn laughed.
“Children never heal from mothers who fill them with fear.”
Claire looked at her.
“You mean sons.”
The words struck.
Daniel.
Julian.
Both raised to believe love required loyalty to Evelyn’s version of reality.
Julian appeared on the upper balcony.
“Mother.”
Evelyn looked up.
“You always arrive after everything important.”
“I learned that from you.”
Her face twisted.
She pressed a button near the presentation table.
Gas began hissing from vents beneath the floor.
The stolen vial had been connected to the ventilation system.
Evelyn intended to poison everyone who entered.
Claire covered her mouth.
Julian ran toward the control balcony.
Then Daniel’s video continued playing.
A voice off-camera asked whether he wanted Claire brought inside.
Daniel answered.
“Yes.”
Evelyn’s recorded voice replied.
No.
Let him understand what disobedience costs.
The matriarch stared at the screen.
That portion had not been part of the file she intended to play.
Someone had changed it.
Harris’s voice came through the ballroom speakers.
May you like
“Mrs. Harrow.”
“Daniel left more than one recording.”
