Chapter 6 - The Empty Back Seat

Serena screamed Lily’s name.
The rear passenger door stood open.
A white shoe lay on the gravel.
Claire picked it up.
The strap had torn.
Naomi checked the vehicle.
The child safety lock was still engaged.
Someone had opened the door from outside using the electronic key.
Only Naomi and her assistant had access.
Her assistant’s phone went directly to voicemail.
Investigator Vance issued an abduction alert.
Estate cameras had been disabled.
A road camera captured a silver van leaving through the service gate.
The license plate belonged to the Harrow Foundation.
Julian called Evelyn.
She answered immediately.
“Where is Lily?” he demanded.
Evelyn sounded weak.
“I am in a hospital bed.”
“You planned Claire’s arrest.”
“That woman assaulted me.”
“Where is my niece?”
A pause followed.
Then Evelyn’s voice hardened.
“She is with people who understand how to care for her.”
Claire took the phone.
“If you hurt her—”
“I have never hurt Lily.”
“The marks around her wrist are on video.”
“She embarrassed me.”
The answer came so naturally that even Julian closed his eyes.
Claire lowered her voice.
“Bring her back.”
“Sign a statement withdrawing your accusation.”
“Transfer Lily’s proxy to Julian.”
“And surrender Daniel’s original trust.”
Julian stared at the phone.
“You used my name.”
Evelyn ignored him.
Claire understood.
The abduction was not only about the trust.
Evelyn wanted to force Julian into complicity.
If he accepted the proxy after Lily’s kidnapping, he could never expose her without implicating himself.
“No,” Julian said.
His voice shook.
“You will return her.”
“You have spent your entire life taking what this family gave you.”
Evelyn’s tone sharpened.
“Do not become ungrateful now.”
Julian laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“You convinced me Daniel distrusted Claire.”
“You made me believe Lily needed protection from her mother.”
“You were preparing to use me as the legal face of a kidnapping.”
“I was preserving your inheritance.”
“It was never mine.”
He ended the call.
Claire looked toward Vance.
“Can you trace it?”
“The hospital line.”
“She knew we could.”
Evelyn wanted them looking at her while someone moved Lily elsewhere.
Harris regained consciousness.
He had found Conrad Pike beneath the dogwood with two men.
They struck him and removed the metal container.
Before losing consciousness, Harris heard one man say they were taking “the girl and the key” to Saint Martha’s.
Saint Martha’s Academy was an abandoned girls’ school owned by the Harrow Foundation.
Evelyn had announced plans to convert it into a retreat.
No renovation ever began.
Police surrounded the property within forty minutes.
The silver van stood behind the chapel.
Inside the school, they found Naomi’s assistant tied inside a classroom.
She had been forced to surrender the car key.
Lily’s flower crown rested on a chapel pew.
The hidden camera was gone.
On the altar lay Daniel’s original trust.
Someone had written across it in red ink.
THE CHILD BELONGS TO THE FAMILY.
Then a small voice came through the old intercom.
“Mommy?”
Claire looked toward the ceiling speaker.

Lily began crying.
“Uncle Conrad says the building is going to burn.”
