Chapter 2 - The Camera Inside the Crown

Harris carried the damaged crown into the library.
Claire followed with Lily in her arms.
Naomi Bell and Malcolm Reed came behind them.
Julian remained with Evelyn until the paramedics moved her onto a stretcher.
Serena joined them last.
Her face was colorless.
“What camera?” Julian asked when he entered.
Lily pressed her face against Claire’s neck.
Claire stroked the child’s hair.
“It is all right.”
“You did nothing wrong.”
Harris placed the crown on the desk.
The white silk flowers were crushed.
Several beads had broken loose.
Near the center, beneath a folded ribbon, sat a tiny black lens.
Julian stared at it.
“Why was my niece wearing a camera?”
Claire answered.
“Because she wanted to record the ceremony for her father.”
Lily lifted her head.
“I wanted Daddy to see the flowers.”
The room fell quiet.
Four years earlier, Daniel had recorded bedtime stories for Lily during his final hospital stay.
The child still believed videos could travel somewhere the dead could watch them.
Claire had never corrected her directly.
Sometimes imagination gave grief a shape small hands could hold.
Naomi examined the device.
“This has local storage?”
“Yes.”
“It also streams to my phone.”
Evelyn’s ambulance doors closed outside.
Julian looked toward the window.
“Did you know the camera was recording when you hit my mother?”
Claire met his eyes.
“Yes.”
“And when she grabbed Lily?”
“Yes.”
Serena sat down heavily.
“What else did it record?”
Claire unlocked her phone.
The file had started forty minutes before the ceremony.
It showed Lily walking through the ballroom with the flower crown balanced between both hands.
She had been searching for Claire.
Near the presentation platform, Evelyn spoke with Conrad Pike, the Harrow family’s financial adviser.
They did not notice the child standing behind a curtain.
Their voices were faint but understandable.
Conrad said the trustees would approve the transfer once Julian signed.
Evelyn answered that Claire’s proxy would no longer matter after the guardianship petition was filed.
Julian looked up.
“What guardianship petition?”
Claire’s stomach tightened.
She had suspected Evelyn intended to challenge her parental rights.
She had not known the paperwork was ready.
Conrad’s voice continued.
Mercer has already prepared the evaluation.
The mother will be described as emotionally unstable.
The child will be placed under family supervision.
Serena covered her mouth.
Julian stared at Claire.
“I knew nothing about this.”
Claire wanted to believe him.
Daniel had loved his younger brother.
Lily still called him Uncle Jules and climbed into his lap during Christmas dinners.
But fear had made Julian loyal to silence for too long.
On the recording, Evelyn spoke again.
Once Lily is under my authority, the proxy belongs to the estate.
Conrad asked whether Claire would fight.
Evelyn laughed.
She has spent four years believing Daniel died because she distracted him during the storm.
Guilt makes people obedient.
Claire’s hand went cold around the phone.
Julian looked at her.
“What does that mean?”
She did not answer.
The recording continued.
Conrad lowered his voice.
And if the insurance investigator reopens the boat case?
Evelyn replied without hesitation.
He won’t.
The remaining deckhand was paid.
The damaged radio is gone.
Daniel’s final call was erased.
Claire stopped the video.
Lily had begun trembling again.
She did not understand every word.
She understood her father’s name.
Claire passed her to Serena.
“Take Lily into the sitting room.”
Serena accepted the child carefully.
Lily clung to Claire.
“Mommy, are you coming?”
“In one minute.”
“I promise.”
When the door closed, Claire turned toward Julian.
May you like
“Your mother did not only steal Daniel’s trust.”
“She knows why he died.”
