Chapter 16 - The Testimony of a Child
The court permitted Lily to testify through a recorded forensic interview.
Claire watched from behind one-way glass.
A child specialist sat across from Lily in a room filled with books and soft toys.
The crushed flower crown rested inside an evidence bag on a shelf.
The interviewer asked what happened at the ceremony.
Lily explained that she made the crown for “the big family night.”
She said Evelyn became angry when Lily touched the presentation control.
The child had accidentally advanced the screen before Evelyn finished speaking.
A hidden financial slide appeared for several seconds.
It showed transfers from the children’s housing fund.
That was why Evelyn grabbed her.
“She said I ruined everything,” Lily whispered.
“What happened next?”
“She took my crown.”
“She squeezed me.”
“Mommy made her stop.”
“Did your mother tell you what to say today?”
“No.”
“What did she tell you?”
“To say what I remember.”
“And if you do not remember?”
“To say I do not remember.”
The interviewer asked about Saint Martha’s.
Lily described the chair, the painted stars, Conrad’s knife, and the smoke.
She began crying when she remembered the fire.
The specialist stopped immediately.
“You do not have to continue.”
Lily wiped her face.
“I want to.”
She described kicking the telescope.
She said Uncle Julian helped her mother.
Then she asked whether Evelyn would be angry when she watched the video.
The specialist answered carefully.
“You are not responsible for how adults feel about the truth.”
Lily looked down.
“I was quiet because quiet makes Grandma Evelyn less mad.”
Claire pressed both hands against the glass.
That sentence became central to the case.
Evelyn’s defense argued that Claire manipulated Lily after the ballroom incident.
The crown footage disproved it.
The child had already learned to reduce her voice before Claire intervened.
Fear existed before the slap.
Julian testified in person.
He still wore a cardiac monitor after the poisoning.
He admitted supporting Evelyn’s false version of Daniel’s trust.
He admitted asking Claire to leave the ballroom.
He admitted ignoring signs that Lily feared her grandmother.
Evelyn’s attorney attacked him.
“You are blaming your mother to repair your marriage.”
Julian looked toward Serena.
She sat in the public gallery but did not meet his eyes.
“No.”
“My marriage may not be repaired.”
“I am testifying because my brother described me correctly.”
“I used peace as an excuse to let other people carry the danger.”
Serena finally looked at him.
Not with forgiveness.
With recognition.
Claire testified about Daniel’s complicity, the trust, the final call, and Evelyn’s threats.
The attorney asked why she struck an elderly woman.
Claire did not soften the answer.
“I saw her hand around my daughter’s wrist.”
“I reacted.”
“Do you regret it?”
“I regret that Lily was ever close enough to be harmed.”
“That was not the question.”
“Yes.”
“I regret losing control.”
“But I do not regret stopping her.”
