Chapter 4 - The Warrant Prepared in Advance
The warrant accused Claire of aggravated assault against an elderly person.
It also accused her of endangering Lily during the ballroom confrontation.
The complaint had been filed forty-eight hours earlier.
Before the slap.
Before Evelyn grabbed Lily.
Before the ceremony began.
Naomi read the timestamp twice.
“This warrant was prepared in anticipation of an event that had not occurred.”
The older officer avoided her eyes.
“We were instructed to serve it tonight.”
“By whom?” Malcolm asked.
“The county prosecutor’s office.”
Claire looked at Julian.
His face showed the same realization.
Evelyn expected Claire to resist the guardianship announcement.
She had arranged an arrest in advance.
The public confrontation was not an accident.
It was the final step in removing Claire and seizing Lily’s trust.
“I will come voluntarily,” Claire said.
Julian moved toward her.
“No.”
“They cannot take you based on this.”
“I am not resisting in front of Lily.”
Naomi stepped between Claire and the officers.
“My client will surrender after I verify the warrant with the issuing judge.”
The younger officer looked uncomfortable.
“We have orders.”
“And I have a recording showing the alleged victim assaulting a child before Claire intervened.”
Naomi held up her phone.
“If you handcuff her without preserving that evidence, your department becomes part of the record.”
The officers exchanged a look.
Claire heard a small sound behind them.
Lily stood at the sitting-room door.
Her face was creased from sleep.
One bare foot rested on top of the other.
“Mommy?”
Claire crossed the room and knelt.
“I have to go talk to some people.”
“Did Grandma Evelyn call the police?”
The older officer looked away.
Claire touched Lily’s cheek.
“I will come home.”
“You promised one minute.”
The words cut deeper than accusation.
“I know.”
“I am sorry.”
Lily wrapped both arms around Claire’s neck.
“I can tell them she hurt me.”
“You will tell the truth when you feel safe.”
“You do not have to save me.”
Julian knelt beside them.
“I will stay with Lily.”
Claire looked at him.
Trust could not return in a single night.
But Lily needed someone she knew.
Serena rested a hand on the child’s shoulder.
“We both will.”
Claire stood.
She removed her earrings and gave them to Naomi.
Then she held out her hands.
The older officer did not use handcuffs.
Evelyn’s plan had depended on photographs of Claire being dragged from Harrow House.
Instead, Claire walked through the ballroom upright.
Several guests remained near the entrance.
Phones rose.
Claire stopped beside the crushed flower crown.
Harris had placed it on a small side table.
The camera lens remained visible among the torn blossoms.
Claire looked directly toward the guests.
“My daughter was harmed tonight.”
“The woman who harmed her planned my arrest before it happened.”
“The recording will be released to law enforcement.”
“Anyone who witnessed the incident should preserve what they saw.”
She continued toward the police car.
At the county station, Naomi challenged the warrant.
The issuing judge’s electronic signature was valid.
The authorization was not.
The judge had died at 6:20 that evening.
