Chapter 5 - The Door That Required a Sacrifice

Michael moved toward the release.

Lucas blocked him.

“You already sacrificed two years.”

“You spent two years mourning me.”

“That is not the same as dying.”

Marco examined the mechanism.

A heavy lever had to remain pressed while the shaft opened above it.

The moment the pressure stopped, the shaft sealed.

Hannah removed the silver chain from the locket.

“Can this hold it?”

Michael examined the links.

“Maybe for a minute.”

“We need less than that.”

They wrapped the chain around the lever and secured it through a steel bracket.

Lucas pressed the mechanism.

The maintenance shaft opened.

One of his men climbed first carrying the port ledger.

The second took Antonio’s medical file.

Hannah loaded photographs and Michael’s recordings into waterproof cases.

Smoke began entering through the ceiling vents.

The chain stretched.

Kayla was not there; avoid.

Marco climbed next.

Michael helped Hannah toward the shaft.

She stopped.

“What about Gabriel?”

“He is at the church.”

“Salvatore will kill him for failing.”

Michael stared at her.

“He tried to kill you.”

“He is also Salvatore’s son.”

Lucas looked surprised.

Gabriel had never said it.

Michael confirmed it.

“Salvatore kept the relationship hidden.”

“Gabriel believed serving him would earn public recognition.”

Hannah looked toward the flames beginning near the rear pipes.

“Then Gabriel is another person Salvatore trained to confuse obedience with love.”

The chain began glowing.

Lucas pushed Hannah into the shaft.

She climbed.

Michael followed.

Lucas entered last.

The chain snapped.

The hatch dropped.

It caught Lucas across the shoulder.

Michael grabbed one arm.

Hannah reached down for the other.

Together, they pulled him through as the shaft sealed.

An explosion tore through the vault.

The ground lifted beneath them.

Track Nine burst apart.

Fire rolled across the rail yard.

Lucas landed hard near the tracks.

Michael lay beside him.

For several seconds, neither brother moved.

Then Lucas turned his head.

“You look terrible.”

Michael laughed.

“You always needed better opening lines.”

Hannah sat in the gravel, breathing smoke.

The reunion she had imagined during two years of silence had never looked like this.

There was no embrace.

No simple explanation.

Only two brothers alive beneath a burning sky.

Sirens approached.

Michael’s face changed.

“Those are not ours.”

Federal vehicles entered through the western gate.

Agents surrounded them.

A woman in a dark coat stepped forward.

She displayed her badge.

“Special Agent Elena Ruiz.”

“Organized Crime Task Force.”

Lucas slowly raised his hands.

Michael did the same.

Elena looked at the burning vault.

“Tell me you recovered the ledger.”

Hannah lifted the waterproof case.

Elena nodded.

“Good.”

“Now all of you are coming with me.”

Lucas looked toward Michael.

“You called federal agents.”

May you like

Michael met his eyes.

“I called the only people Salvatore could not buy completely.”
