Michael was transferred to protective custody.
Lucas refused.
“If I disappear into isolation, Sava wins the story he wants.”
Ruiz argued through the prison phone.
“This is not a story.”

Lucas looked toward Hannah behind the glass.
“You agree with her.”
“I agree that refusing protection because it looks weak is another form of performance.”
Lucas smiled faintly.
“You sound like Michael.”
“No.”
“He sounds like me now.”

Two days later, three inmates entered his former unit carrying improvised knives.
They attacked the man sleeping in his old bunk.
