Chapter 18 - The Architecture of Trust

Michael completed his architecture degree at thirty-eight.
His final project designed transitional housing for witnesses, families leaving violent organizations, and people rebuilding after financial control.
Every room had natural light.
Every door opened from the inside.
No resident wing shared a single central key.
The design won an award.
Michael accepted it without mentioning the Valentasi name.
After the ceremony, Hannah met him outside the university.
“You made hidden rooms impossible.”
“I have had enough of them.”
They walked toward the lake.
Michael stopped near the water.
“I need to ask something.”
Hannah waited.
“Not a proposal.”
“That clarification is appreciated.”
He smiled nervously.
“Do you think we are building a life together?”
Hannah considered the question.
Years earlier, he would have answered it for both of them.
Now he waited.
“We are building something.”
“Is that enough?”
“For today.”
“Yes.”
Michael nodded.
Then Hannah took his hand.
“This does not mean I have forgiven every part.”
“I know.”
“Sometimes I still wake up believing you disappeared.”
“I know.”
“Sometimes I hate you.”
“I know.”
“You accept that very easily.”
“I spent years controlling which truth reached you.”
“I do not get to negotiate the truth now.”
They stood beside the water.
No ring appeared.

No dramatic promise corrected the past.
Their future began as a structure reviewed from both sides.
