Hannah and Michael married two years later.
The ceremony took place inside the courtyard of his first completed housing project.
Sofia sat in the front row.
Lucas stood beside Michael.
Kayla served as Hannah’s witness and complained about the flowers.
Gabriel attended through a supervised video link from a rehabilitation program after release.
Marco sent no message.
His new identity required distance.
Daniel stood near the exit.
Agent Ruiz came without a badge.
The vows were short.
Michael spoke first.
“I will not use fear as permission to decide for you.”
“I will tell the truth before I decide whether it is safe.”
“I will accept that love does not make your answer mine.”
Hannah looked at him.
“I will not pretend history disappears because we chose another future.”
“I will question you without apologizing for the question.”
“I will leave any room where love becomes ownership.”
Michael nodded.
“That seems fair.”
Kayla whispered that arguing during vows was a bad sign.
Everyone heard her.
The laughter broke the tension.
Lucas looked toward the open courtyard doors.
The old organization once called secrecy loyalty.
This family practiced something less dramatic and more difficult.
Questions.
Boundaries.
Answers that could remain no.
After the ceremony, Sofia handed Hannah a small silver chain.
Not the original.
A new one.
“For the locket,” she said.
Hannah accepted the chain.
She did not remove the locket from the diner display.
The chain became a bracelet instead.
