Lucas served ten years.
When he left prison, reporters waited outside.
He declined every interview.
Sofia stood near the car.
Michael waited beside her.
Hannah and Kayla remained several yards away.
Lucas embraced his mother first.
Then Michael.
The brothers held each other briefly.
Years of anger did not disappear.
Neither did love.
Lucas entered supervised release with strict restrictions.
He could not manage businesses connected to the old organization.
He could not contact former criminal associates.
He worked as an adviser for a violence-prevention program under independent oversight.
Young men listened because he did not pretend he had always opposed the life.
He described the benefits honestly.
Money.
Fear.
Status.
Then he described the cost.
No private choices.
No relationships untouched by leverage.
No grief without strategy.
One evening, Lucas entered Rosewood after closing.
Kayla handed him a mop.
He stared at it.
“I came to speak with Hannah.”
“You can speak while cleaning.”
“I own part of this building.”
“No, you do not.”
Lucas took the mop.
Hannah watched from Table 6.
“You look different.”
“I am holding a mop.”
“I meant without men around you.”
“That too.”
He sat after Kayla approved the floor.
“Michael tells me you are seeing each other.”
“We are having dinner sometimes.”
“Is that seeing each other?”
“It is none of your business.”
Lucas nodded.
“That was the correct answer.”
Hannah studied him.
“What will you do now?”
“Learn how to exist without being obeyed.”
“That sounds difficult.”
“It is surprisingly quiet.”
Lucas looked around the diner.
“The first night I came here, I thought buying buildings meant I understood the people inside them.”
“You did not know Kayla.”
“No one truly knows Kayla.”
From the kitchen, Kayla shouted that she could hear him.
Lucas smiled.
The expression looked unfamiliar.
