Chapter 17 - The Locket Returns
The court released the locket after every appeal ended.
Agent Ruiz brought it to Rosewood inside an evidence box.
The silver had darkened slightly.
The chain was gone, melted in the rail-yard fire.
Hannah opened it.
Michael’s Cape Cod photograph remained inside.
Behind it sat Antonio’s letter and a copy of the port-key sequence.
Three generations of secrets rested in one small object.
Michael stood across the table.
“What do you want to do with it?”
“I do not know.”
“It belonged to my mother.”
“She said it belongs to you now.”
“That sounds like another family deciding for me.”
Michael almost smiled.
“Then decide.”
Hannah removed the photograph.
She looked at the man Michael had been.
Light brown hair.
Wind in his face.
Eyes narrowed by sunlight.
The happiness in the photograph had been real.
So had the lie surrounding it.
She placed the photograph back.
Then she carried the locket to Sofia.
Sofia opened it slowly.
“This belonged to Antonio’s mother first.”
“Then you should keep it.”
Sofia shook her head.
“It has carried enough family authority.”
“What would you do?”
“Give it a place where everyone knows what is inside.”
They created a small display inside Rosewood.
Not near the entrance.
Near Table 6.
The locket rested open behind glass.
A plaque beneath it read:
TRUTH HIDDEN FOR PROTECTION CAN STILL BECOME A PRISON.
No names appeared.
The diner did not need to become a crime museum.
The object marked the moment an ordinary woman’s life collided with a world built on secrecy.
Customers sometimes asked about it.
Kayla told a different version each time.
