Chapter 15 - Michael Comes Home

Michael was released after serving four years.

His cooperation and the tunnel operation reduced the final portion of his sentence.

Hannah did not meet him at the prison gate.

Sofia did.

Daniel drove.

Lucas joined through a monitored video call.

The brothers spoke privately before Michael entered Chicago.

Three days later, the bell above Rosewood’s door chimed.

Michael stepped inside.

Hannah was wiping Table 6.

For one second, the diner became the Boston coffee shop again.

Then she noticed the scar.

The limp.

The hesitation.

He was no longer the man she remembered.

He was also no longer hiding behind another name.

“Coffee?” she asked.

“Black.”

“You hated black coffee.”

“I thought it made me look mysterious.”

“It made you irritable.”

Michael sat.

Hannah poured the cup.

Neither spoke for several minutes.

“I found an apartment,” he said.

“Good.”

“I am starting architecture classes in January.”

“You finally decided to become the person you pretended to be.”

“I do not know whether that person was entirely false.”

Hannah sat across from him.

“That is part of the problem.”

“What is?”

“I cannot separate what was real from what you created.”

Michael nodded.

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

“I loved you.”

“I also designed the conditions under which you could love me.”

“That was manipulation even when my feelings were real.”

Hannah looked at him.

The answer did not repair anything.

It proved he understood the damage without waiting for her to describe it again.

“You do not get to return to our old life,” she said.

“I know.”

“You do not get to wait politely until I reward you.”

“I know.”

“What do you want?”

“To become someone who can hear your answer even if it is no.”

Hannah stood.

“Finish your coffee.”

“That is the only answer you are getting today.”

Michael smiled.

“Fair.”

He returned the following week.

Then again.

He never waited outside after closing.

Never followed her home.

Never used danger, guilt, or history to force proximity.

Trust returned in fragments.

Not romance.
