Chapter 9: The Brother Who Betrayed the Family

The silence after Alexander's accusation was unbearable.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The only sound inside the penthouse was the rain hitting the windows.
Ethan stared at Daniel.
His younger brother.
The boy he used to carry on his shoulders.
The person who called him whenever life became difficult.
The person Ethan defended even when their parents criticized him.
And now...
that same person was standing in the center of the room with fear written across his face.
"Daniel."
Ethan's voice was quiet.
Almost gentle.
That made Daniel look even more terrified.
"Tell me he's wrong."
Daniel opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Ethan nodded slowly.
That was all the answer he needed.
"You can't."
Daniel looked down.
"Ethan..."
"No."
He shook his head.
"Not yet."
He looked at Alexander.
"Explain."
Alexander crossed his arms.
"Daniel has been moving money through several shell companies connected to Carter Industries."
Daniel immediately reacted.
"That's not true."
Alexander placed a folder on the table.
"Then explain these."
Daniel stared at the documents.
His face changed.
Ethan noticed.
Recognition.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
"What are they?"
Ethan asked.
Alexander answered.
"Financial transfers."
He opened the folder.
"Millions of dollars moved from company accounts into private accounts."
Richard stepped forward.
"Daniel?"
His voice was broken.
"You did this?"
Daniel looked at his father.
And for the first time, Ethan saw something different.
Not fear.
Resentment.
"You want to know why?"
Nobody expected those words.
Daniel laughed quietly.
A bitter laugh.
"Everyone wants to know why."
He looked around the room.
"Funny."
A pause.
"After twenty years, everyone suddenly cares about the truth."
Ethan frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
Daniel looked at him.
"You."
The word was filled with pain.
"You were always the chosen one."
Ethan froze.
"What?"
Daniel continued.
"Everything belonged to you."
He pointed around the room.
"The company."
"The name."
"Father's approval."
"Mother's attention."
Daniel's voice became louder.
"I was always the second son."
Ethan stared.
"Daniel..."
"No."
His brother shook his head.
"You don't understand."
A pause.
"You never had to."
The room became still.
"I spent my entire life trying to prove I mattered."
Daniel looked at Richard.
"Do you know how many times Father told me I wasn't ready?"
Richard looked hurt.
"Daniel..."
"You told Ethan he was a leader."
His eyes filled with anger.
"You told me I was a helper."
Ethan felt a painful realization.
All these years, Daniel had been carrying something.
Something nobody noticed.
"I didn't want to destroy the company."
Daniel's voice lowered.
"I wanted control."
Alexander watched him carefully.
"But someone convinced you."
Daniel looked away.
Ethan noticed.
"Who?"
Daniel remained silent.
"Who told you what to do?"
No answer.
Then Olivia spoke.
"Daniel wasn't acting alone."
Everyone turned.
She looked at Ethan.
"The money transfers I found weren't just connected to Daniel."
She pointed at the documents.
"There was someone above him."
Ethan looked at Alexander.
Then Olivia.
"Someone above him?"
Olivia nodded.
"Someone who knew every system."
Someone who had access to everything.
Someone who understood the company from the inside.
Richard's expression changed.
"No..."
Ethan looked at him.
"What?"
Richard looked terrified.
"That can't be."
Alexander narrowed his eyes.
"What?"
Richard slowly sat down.
"My old business partner."
The room froze.
Claire looked at him.
"The one who disappeared?"
Richard nodded.
"Thomas Vale."
Ethan frowned.
"Who is Thomas Vale?"
Richard looked at him.
"The man who helped build Carter Industries."
Claire immediately responded.
"No."
Everyone looked at her.
Claire's face became pale.
"He helped build Morgan Technologies."
A pause.
"And when Richard betrayed me..."
She looked at the documents.
"Thomas was the only person who knew how everything worked."
Ethan understood.
The stolen company.
The hidden son.
The missing records.
The financial manipulation.
It all connected.
But one question remained.
"Where is Thomas now?"
Nobody answered.
Then Ethan's phone rang.
The sound cut through the tension.
Unknown number.
Everyone looked at him.
Ethan answered.
"Hello?"
A man's voice came through.
Older.
Calm.
Confident.
"Hello, Ethan Carter."
Ethan's entire body went still.
Because the voice sounded familiar.
Not from memory.
From recordings.
From company meetings.
From years of hearing his father talk about the past.
"Who is this?"
The man laughed softly.
"You already know."
Ethan looked at Richard.
His father had gone completely pale.
"Thomas."
A pause.
"Very good."
The voice continued.
"I've been waiting a long time to speak with you."
Ethan tightened his grip on the phone.
"What do you want?"
The answer came immediately.
"The truth."
A bitter smile appeared in the man's voice.
"The same thing everyone in that room claims they want."
Ethan's eyes moved around the penthouse.
Everyone was listening.
Thomas continued:
"But the difference between me and your family..."
A pause.
"...is that I am not afraid of what the truth will destroy."
Ethan said nothing.
Then Thomas delivered the words that changed everything.
"Your father didn't steal Morgan Technologies."
Everyone froze.
"What?"
Thomas continued.
"He stole something much bigger."
Ethan felt a chill.
"What are you talking about?"
A pause.
Then:
"Ask Richard who your real mother was."
The call ended.
Ethan slowly lowered the phone.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone in the room understood one thing.
The secret was deeper than anyone imagined.
Even deeper than a stolen company.
Deeper than a forgotten son.
Deeper than betrayal.
Ethan looked at Richard.
"Who is my real mother?"
Richard closed his eyes.
May you like
And for the first time...
he looked completely broken.
