Chapter 13: The Woman Who Survived the Lie

The location led them outside the city.
Away from the glass towers.
Away from Carter Industries.
Away from everything Ethan had known.
The farther they drove, the more unfamiliar the world became.
No reporters.
No executives.
No expensive buildings carrying his family name.
Just a quiet road surrounded by trees.
A place where secrets could survive.
Ethan sat in the passenger seat, staring out the window.
For the first time in his life, he had no idea what he was about to find.
A few hours ago, he thought his biggest problem was protecting his wife.
Then he discovered his family had hidden a stolen company.
Then he discovered he had a brother.
Then he discovered his mother might still be alive.
Every answer created another question.
Olivia reached over and gently touched his hand.
"You don't have to pretend you're okay."
Ethan looked at her.
"I don't know how to feel."
She nodded.
"That's okay."
A pause.
"You spent your whole life believing one story."
She looked ahead.
"And tonight, you found out your entire life was built on another."
Ethan gave a tired smile.
"You make it sound simple."
"It isn't."
Olivia squeezed his hand.
"But you don't have to solve everything in one night."
Ethan looked at her.
After everything...
she was still there.
The thought almost broke him.
Because so many people had chosen power.
But Olivia had chosen him.
Behind them, Alexander and Claire followed in another car with Daniel.
Richard and Victoria came separately.
No one trusted anyone anymore.
Not completely.
And maybe that was the most honest thing about the night.
When they finally arrived, Ethan saw a small house hidden between the trees.
Old.
Simple.
Nothing like the Carter mansion.
Nothing like the penthouse.
Yet something about it felt familiar.
His heart started racing.
Because some part of him already knew.
This place mattered.
Ethan stepped out of the car.
Nobody spoke.
He walked toward the front door.
His hand stopped before touching the handle.
Twenty years.
Twenty years of questions.
Twenty years of wondering.
Twenty years of missing someone he barely remembered.
Then he opened the door.
And froze.
An elderly woman sat near the window.
Her back was turned.
She was holding a small photograph.
The same photograph from his childhood.
The woman slowly turned around.
And Ethan forgot how to breathe.
Her face was older.
Her hair was silver.
Her hands were thinner.
But her eyes...
Those eyes were exactly the same.
The eyes he saw every time he looked in the mirror.
"Ethan?"
Her voice broke.
A single word.
His name.
The name she had not spoken in twenty years.
Ethan couldn't move.
He wanted to run to her.
He wanted to hug her.
He wanted to ask a thousand questions.
But instead...
he stood there like a child.
A child who had waited his whole life for this moment.
"Mom?"
The word came out before he could stop it.
Amelia Morgan covered her mouth.
Tears filled her eyes.
"My baby."
And that was the moment Ethan finally broke.
Not with anger.
Not with pain.
With grief.
Grief for the years they lost.
Grief for every birthday.
Every holiday.
Every moment she should have been there.
He walked toward her slowly.
Then she held him.
And for the first time in twenty years...
Ethan felt like something missing inside him had returned.
Everyone in the room stayed silent.
Even Richard.
Because some moments were too painful to interrupt.
After several minutes, Ethan pulled away.
His eyes were full of questions.
"Why?"
Amelia closed her eyes.
"I know."
Her voice trembled.
"You deserve answers."
Ethan nodded.
"Yes."
A pause.
"Why did you let me believe you were dead?"
Amelia looked down.
"I didn't."
That answer surprised him.
"What?"
"I never chose to disappear."
She looked toward Richard.
Then Victoria.
Then Claire.
"I was forced."
The room became tense.
Richard looked away.
Ethan noticed.
"Forced by who?"
Amelia took a deep breath.
"Thomas Vale."
Everyone froze.
Even Alexander.
"Thomas?"
Amelia nodded.
"He was the one who found me after the accident."
Ethan's fists tightened.
"He saved you."
"No."
Her voice was quiet.
"He trapped me."
The room went silent.
"After the accident, I woke up in a private medical facility."
She looked at Ethan.
"I had injuries. I couldn't remember everything at first."
A pause.
"Thomas told me Richard caused the accident."
Richard looked shocked.
"What?"
Amelia looked at him.
"I believed him."
Nobody spoke.
"Thomas showed me documents."
She looked at Claire.
"Evidence that Richard stole Morgan Technologies."
Claire lowered her eyes.
"Some of it was true."
Amelia nodded.
"Yes."
Then she looked at Ethan.
"But Thomas wanted more than revenge."
"What did he want?"
Her expression became darker.
"Control."
A pause.
"He wanted Richard and me to destroy each other."
Ethan frowned.
"Why?"
Amelia looked toward the window.
"Because Thomas never cared about Carter Industries."
She turned back.
"He cared about becoming the only person powerful enough to control both families."
Everyone went silent.
Then Ethan asked the question everyone feared.
"Why didn't you escape?"
Amelia's eyes filled with sadness.
"Because he threatened you."
The room froze.
Ethan felt cold.
"What?"
"He told me if I tried to contact you, you would disappear."
She swallowed.
"He told me he could destroy your life before you even understood what was happening."
Ethan looked at Richard.
"You knew?"
Richard looked devastated.
"No."
Amelia looked at him.
"You didn't."
A pause.
"But you should have."
Richard lowered his head.
Because she was right.
Ethan looked at his mother.
"Why now?"
Amelia touched his face.
"Because Thomas made one mistake."
"What?"
"He thought I was still powerless."
A faint smile appeared.
"But I spent twenty years collecting evidence."
She walked to a cabinet.
Inside was a box.
She opened it.
Thousands of pages.
Documents.
Recordings.
Photos.
Everything Thomas had tried to bury.
Ethan stared.
"This is everything?"
Amelia nodded.
"The truth about Morgan Technologies."
She looked at Richard.
"The truth about Carter Industries."
Then she looked at Ethan.
"And the truth about what happened the night I disappeared."
Ethan reached for the box.
But before he touched it...
his phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
Ethan answered.
No one spoke.
Then Thomas Vale's voice came through.
"Congratulations, Ethan."
A pause.
"You found your mother."
Ethan's face hardened.
"What do you want?"
Thomas laughed softly.
"The same thing I've always wanted."
Silence.
"To finish what I started."
Then Thomas said the words that made everyone freeze:
"Ask Amelia who really caused the accident."
The call ended.
Ethan slowly lowered the phone.
Everyone looked at Amelia.
May you like
Because for the first time...
she looked afraid.
