Chapter 14: The Final Secret of the Accident

The room remained frozen after the call ended.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone saw it.
The expression on Amelia's face.
The fear.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Fear.
And that frightened Ethan more than anything Thomas Vale could have said.
His mother had survived twenty years of lies.
Twenty years of isolation.
Twenty years of being controlled by someone who wanted her silent.
But now...
one sentence from Thomas had broken through her strength.
"Mom."
Ethan stepped closer.
"What is he talking about?"
Amelia looked away.
That hurt him.
Because after everything...
after finding her...
after believing they could finally have the truth...
she was still hiding something.
"Amelia."
Claire's voice was gentle.
"You have to tell him."
Amelia closed her eyes.
"I know."
A long pause.
"I just never wanted him to carry this."
Ethan felt his chest tighten.
"Carry what?"
Amelia looked at him.
"The truth about the accident."
Everyone became silent.
Richard stepped forward.
"Amelia..."
She looked at him.
For the first time in twenty years, there was no hatred in her eyes.
Only exhaustion.
"You need to hear this too."
Richard stopped.
Amelia walked slowly toward the table.
She placed the old box of evidence down.
"The night of the accident..."
She took a breath.
"I was not driving alone."
Ethan frowned.
"What?"
"I was meeting someone."
"Who?"
Amelia looked at Richard.
"Your father."
The room changed instantly.
Ethan looked at Richard.
"You were there?"
Richard looked shocked.
"I wasn't in the car."
Amelia nodded.
"No."
A pause.
"But you were supposed to meet me."
Richard looked down.
"Yes."
Ethan felt the confusion growing.
"Why?"
Amelia looked at the documents.
"Because I had discovered something."
She opened one file.
Inside were old financial records.
"I found proof that Thomas Vale had been manipulating both companies."
Alexander stepped forward.
"I knew it."
Amelia nodded.
"Thomas wasn't just stealing Morgan Technologies."
She looked at Ethan.
"He was creating a war between families."
"Why?"
"Because divided people are easier to control."
The words made sense.
Too much sense.
Amelia continued.
"That night, I was going to give Richard the evidence."
Richard looked at her.
"You were going to trust me?"
A sad smile appeared.
"I didn't trust you."
A pause.
"But I trusted that you loved Ethan."
The words hit Richard harder than anger.
Ethan noticed.
Because that was the tragedy.
Everyone in this room had loved something.
But they had chosen the wrong things.
Power.
Money.
Control.
Fear.
"What happened next?"
Ethan asked.
Amelia's hands trembled.
"Before I reached Richard..."
She stopped.
"I realized someone was following me."
The room went quiet.
"Who?"
Amelia looked at Thomas's documents.
"Thomas."
A pause.
"But he wasn't alone."
Ethan's expression changed.
"What do you mean?"
Amelia looked at Victoria.
Everyone turned.
Victoria froze.
"No."
Amelia's eyes filled with sadness.
"I'm sorry."
Ethan looked between them.
"Mom?"
Victoria immediately shook her head.
"Don't listen to her."
But her voice lacked confidence.
Amelia continued.
"Victoria knew what Thomas was planning."
The room exploded with silence.
Richard stared at his wife.
"Victoria?"
She looked away.
"I didn't know he would hurt her."
Ethan felt his heart sink.
"You knew?"
Victoria's eyes filled with tears.
"I knew Thomas wanted Amelia gone."
A pause.
"But I thought he would force her to leave."
Ethan stared.
"You helped him."
Victoria shook her head.
"No."
She looked broken.
"I made a terrible choice."
Ethan stepped back.
"That is what everyone says."
His voice cracked.
"I made a mistake."
"I was protecting the family."
"I had no choice."
He looked around.
"Everyone always has a choice."
Nobody answered.
Amelia continued.
"Victoria gave Thomas information."
Richard looked at her.
"What information?"
"Where I would be."
Victoria closed her eyes.
"And Thomas used it."
The room became unbearable.
Ethan looked at his mother.
Then his father.
Then the woman who raised him.
His entire childhood was standing in front of him.
And every piece of it was broken.
"Did you cause the accident?"
He asked Victoria.
She looked at him.
"No."
A pause.
"I didn't."
Ethan searched her face.
And this time...
he believed her.
Because guilt and fear looked different.
Victoria had done something terrible.
But she wasn't the person who caused everything.
"Then who did?"
Amelia slowly reached into the box.
She pulled out an old recording.
"The truth is here."
She placed it on the table.
A small device.
Old.
But preserved.
"I recorded a conversation before the accident."
Everyone gathered around.
Amelia pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then voices.
Thomas Vale.
And another person.
A woman's voice.
A voice Ethan recognized.
His heart stopped.
Because it was not Victoria.
It was not Claire.
It was someone else.
Someone who had been in their lives for years.
The recording continued.
Thomas said:
"Once Amelia is gone, everything belongs to us."
The woman's voice answered:
"And what about the boy?"
Thomas laughed.
"Ethan?"
A pause.
"He's the easiest part."
Ethan felt cold.
Then the woman spoke again:
"Good."
A few seconds of silence.
Then the final words.
Words that destroyed everything.
"We raise him as ours."
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Ethan looked at Amelia.
"Who was that?"
Amelia's face was full of sorrow.
She didn't answer.
Because the answer came from behind them.
A familiar voice.
A voice nobody expected.
"I think you already know."
Everyone turned.
Standing at the doorway...
was someone who had been there all along.
Someone Ethan trusted.
Someone who had helped raise him.
Someone whose secret was finally exposed.
Victoria whispered:
"No..."
Ethan stared.
Unable to speak.
May you like
Because the person standing there...
was the one person he never suspected.
